501945 2006-11-25 05:38:00 I have a new 200Gb external hard drive that I want to partition. Are there any programs available at minimal of no cost that can partition this disk without having first to create a Floppy Disk file? (My wonderfully new HP computer doesn't have an A drive!)

TFYH

501947 2006-11-25 06:19:00 If you are using Windows XP, and the drive is detected during boot, then it can be partitioned and formatted from within XP, Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management.

If you want to use FAT 32 though, you would need to make up a Win 98 boot CD, with format.com and fdisk.exe, the latter being the updated version giving large disk support.

Edit: because XP only formats FAT32 up to 32GB AFAIK.

He did say at MINIMAL or NO COST. Partition Magic costs and quite a bit relatively speaking

I prefer Disk Director by Acronis. It is not free but cheaper than Partition Magic. It can resize, move, copy, split, and merge partitions without losing your data. Besides that Disk Director has a number of useful tools to manage your space.
