2006-11-23 03:40:00 | Only some of my IE Favourites had distinctive favicons, but having websites like this one stand out among IE's default was great. I had suspicions recently that some I use only rarely had reverted to IE, but today everything has.... soooo boring. And I don't understand why. I did empty my Recycle Bin last night. But the contents were supposed to be only stuff from a cleanup done 2 days ago (with EasyCleaner, which hasn't wiped them before) & I think they were still there yesterday, I've not fiddled with anything else that I recall. In fact, I keep on postponing the last lot of M/S Updates, as I'm not sure I want IE7 yet. Can I get the favicons back without reloading all the Favourites? And how do I keep them "inviolable" next time? (I'd downloaded a program on my old comp that gave lots of choices for favicons, but didn't use it. Now I don't remember its name)

2006-11-23 03:46:00 | IE is hopeless with fav icons. Use a real webbrowser such as Opera, you will never look back. IE 7 is better with fav icons but still seems to have some problems with them | rogerp (6864) | |
2006-11-23 04:15:00 | My longtime browser of choice has been Firefox. But mine has an error which a reinstall doesn't fix (Javascript in Preferences/profile/whatever?) so I'm using IE until I'm in the mood for the mammoth task of removing every FF scrap & starting again. That mightn't happen for a while.

2006-11-24 21:21:00 | You can protect your favicons from being wiped from the Temporary Internet folder. Manual way:Navigate to your Temporary Internet Folder (Documents & Settings | username | Local folders (may be a hidden folder) | Temporary Internet Folder) Click on the Type bar at the top of the folder listings to sort the files by type. Look for files with the extensions of .ico (these are favicons) Copy the favicons you want to save into another folder (eg make folder called My Favicons in My Documents). If some have identifical names you may have rename them but make sure you keep the .ico extension. Open up IE and under Favourites locate the website entry that you wish to keep the favicon for. Right click on the name and select Properties | Change Icon | Browse. Browse to your new My Favicon folder and select the appropriate favicon (note: may help having the Explorer folder view selected that gives the thumbnails display so you can see what each file looks like). If you cannot find the favicon in your Temporary Internet Folder you may have to visit the website again so that it is downloaded again. Autotmatic way: Download this program: FavOrg 1.4 (www.softpedia.com). It should work for IE6. Read how the program works as it will be automatically visiting all the links in your favourites and checking for any favicons it can find so that it can save them into a new folder. Note: I have never used that program so cannot give a personal recommendation about it. Install at own risk. Regarding your Firefox issue, you should only have to delete your profile folder after uninstalling it to remove all traces that may continue to cause problems after it is reinstalled. I do not know what your problem was with Firefox, but did you try to run it under a new profile? This will eliminate a corrupt profile or dodgy extensions. How to Manage Profiles (www.mozilla.org)

2006-11-25 03:46:00 | Wow. Thanks heaps, Jen. Loads of info there for both of my problems. (and kjaada is quite right - not a huge disaster, but surviveable until help comes) I'll have an experimental burst on both favicons & Firefox as soon as time allows.
