2006-11-22 22:44:00 | Hi Guys, got a issue with my parents PC - they tried to install Service Pack 2 and it killed their PC. - i have tried uninstalling SP2 from the recovery console to no avail - it will not boot in safe mode or normal mode - saying that it has shut down the system because "winsrv" was not found - i want to do a complete reload anyway BUT i can not find the XP CD key that they bought - they thought it was not important and threw it out  and the fact i cant get into windows at all means i cant use the magic jellybean key finder - is there a (free) keyfinder that can boot off a floppy or CD? cause i dont think my parents want to buy a 2nd copy of XP :horrified cheers for any help  MAC_H8R

2006-11-22 23:06:00 | Usually this is a sign of infections with viruses or trojans or other malware before you try to install SP2 . It may not be all is lost though . I am sure that you are going to want Sir Speedy to help here as this may be a long and arduous journey . Do you have any GOOD anti-stuff? Not talking about Norton or McAfee here . . . something that actually works? Take a system snapshot with Belarc Adviser before you lose it all and need to fdisk and clean install Windows . Print out the results and SAVE it somewhere like with your marriage license or dog licensess or so . It (Belarc) will save your butt later on . Get and send a copy of HiJackThis here and let the guys here have a shot . . . . Do you also have a Windows install disc or just a repair disc from the computer manufacturer? <edit> OOPS! I see it's too late for Belarc to help . . too bad! </edit>

2006-11-23 00:09:00 | You have checked all over the PC case for the Product Key? I have seen the product key stickers in some strange places. Even inside the case sometimes. This is of cause assuming that their copy of WinXP is an OEM version.

2006-11-23 03:33:00 | I am sure there is a Linux boot disk that can do this but for the moment the name eludes me. For the moment: Recover lost XP product key from unbootable system: searchwincomputing.techtarget.com

2006-11-23 03:45:00 | Here is another solution, I don't know that this will work I am just getting it off Google: how to recover a xp cd key from a unbootable system you know the scenario your computers playing up and you need to reinstall xp only problem is you did not keep the licence sticker and now you cant boot windows to find the key. so what do you do ? well i worked it out and am posting the info to help any one with the same problems first you will need some things 1 a working xp computer of the same version ie home or pro 2 a bartpe boot cd www.nu2.nu 3 keyfinder.exe from www.magicaljellybean.com 4 LoadHive from www.matcode.com 5 some floppy disks then 6. Booted dead system from PE CD. 7. put LoadHive on a floppy. 8. Ran it from the floppy in PE, loaded C:\WINDOWS\System32\Config\software ... it mounted the hive as SOFTWARE_00. 9. Ran regedit, found the SOFTWARE_00 subkey and navigated to CurrentVerion, exported that subkey to the floppy. 10. I moved to a working XP machine, backed up my DigitalProductId key. I edited the reg file from the floppy to only contain the DigitalProductId key. 11. I merged the DigitalProductId key from the floppy, ran Keyfinder (Magic Jellybean Software) and it pulled the key ! 12. I merged the backup I made and ran Keyfinder again, and sure enough it showed my original key.

2006-11-23 08:45:00 | There is also this FAQ I did for someone else... (homepages.xnet.co.nz) I have not updated it for a while so unsure if the files still exist, but it works. | bob_doe_nz (92) | |
