501889 2006-12-05 08:16:00 It is all up to date and everything. It will be coming round to my place for 2 weeks while we are off so I am thinking of doing a full format (if I can get all the CDs) and also installing the RAM.

Now Here is my next question... What would be better, 1GB (2x 512MB) Kingston ValueRAM for $220 or 512MB (2x 256MB) of Kingston HyperX RAM for $160?

I have checked and the max RAM for the mobo is 2GB

Also, these are DDR400 above, the PC takes DDR333 but that is fine.

501890 2006-12-05 14:43:00 considering with 256MB it has 60MB free you'll only need to add another 512MB at the most, just make sure it is the right type etc etc

as for WHY the lappy has slowed, i think it is partly perception - you get used to your higher end home pc or even just get used to the laptop speed and then it seems slow again. a reinstall will (should) not help, but i suppose it couldn't hurt
i also think the slowdown may have something to do with what you use it for - just like how last year's top end gaming rig is only average the next - the software gets more and more demmanding, but your lappy isn't getting any more powerful

just a thought - is it like mine with an annoying power saving feature that underclocks the processor? THAT could be a problem.

free versions of software are just as good as paid ones, just have less features like scheduled scans

mikebartnz:

all these dell/hp systems being sold with "A pentium four processor 534 with H T technology" - how fast (or slow) is that, and how much RAM is that? answer: F*** all, quite possibly just clearing old stock - it's marketing exploiting the general public's ignorance and that is wrong

for that reason i agree: any xp pc with less than 512MB should not be lagal to sell, and same for any "gaming" pc's with integrated video(and <512MB RAM)

501891 2006-12-05 18:58:00 This is NOT a laptop, it is an IBM 8419 Desktop or something.

What I am going to do as I hate using different sticks is remove the 256MB stick that is in there and get 2 new sticks of the same brand/model.

And as for your perception idea, it is my mum that is saying how slow it is and how it is getting slower and she only uses that PC, nothing else to compare it to...

And have you actually done a reinstall on an OS that has been installed for a few years? You DO notice a large pickup in speed, I even notice a speed increase when I reinstall XP that is only 3 months old on my machine...

Also business software such as MYOB and Quickbooks are not that demanding and we have not installed any new software for a few months...

501892 2006-12-06 01:03:00 yes i have done reinstalls, iv'e done them before and have found a spped increase which was gone the next week when all the old crap was put back on. i just did one last night/this morning after six months (brother's registry (among other things) got raped by a virus and i couldn't repair it), no percieved performance increase because the thing wasn't full of crap - it was purely a gaming rig without any background apps that are'nt windows. your RAM sounded more-or-less empty and you are bastardware free, so i thought a reinstall would be a bit unnessecary/pointless/a pain in the ass. you're welcome to try a reinstall, but i'd stick an extra 512MB in there

as for perception, my old's old p4 used to be fine to use, then after i built this rig i cannot stand to use the old dunger. my parents have also been complaining about how slow it is and have nothing to compare to. the pc didnt physically get any slower, there's just more demmanding apps on it and i'm used to instant action, while they are used to it's speed and rememeber it as being blazing fast when they bought it

i have no idea why i thought it was a laptop:o, but i still wish i never enabled 'cool n quiet' on my pc, it isn't meant to slow it down but i never trust these things

501893 2006-12-06 03:07:00 Well I notice a speed increase and I do not load my installs full of crap... but the PC at work before I started maintaining it and all that it had a lot of crap and stuff on there, from the earlier manager... so in this case it will be a good idea.

What do you mean the RAM sounded more or less empty? the RAM is darn running at 31% free sitting idle at the Windows Desktop...

But the thing is that do they use the newer and more demanding apps? the work PC does not. It may sound stupid, but I have different expectations of different computers that I know/use which are not effected by other PCs and I have noticed this is actually getting slower, I too am used to instant action but I have different profiles if you like for different PCs of what I expect.

LOL, the only mention of laptop was in your post :p

well with 256MB and 60MB odd free leaves you running around 200MB (at idle i presume). i worded it badly, i meant that you didn't look to be running anything other than windows and antivirus at idle, whereas my current pc is sitting at 230MB while i post this, and 219 after closing a few background apps so a reinstall won't exactly free much up. in contrast the p4 idles at >300MB, and would definetly need a reinstall, (but i stuck a spare 256 stick in it to bring it up to 768MB - too lazy to back everything up:p)

and i still dont know where the laptop idea came from either:rolleyes:

501895 2006-12-06 04:28:00 Oh ok I see what you mean now.

I am not looking to free up RAM by reinstalling, I am looking at reinstalling to get rid of all the crap on the HDD other than the documents and that sort of thing that is needed and get rid of all the other crap that the other manager put on...

Mine is sitting with 400MB used and about 5 other apps open (out of 2GB), also total RAM has an impact on how much RAM Windows and other apps will use overall.

Why would you want to backup? :p it is only installing an extra RAM module, not as if it is affecting the HDD ;)

Ha ha, (dare I say it? :p) you were having a Beetle moment :D :p

i meant i added ram instead of formatting/reinstalling. the reinstall would've worked better, but i couldn't be bothered backing up all the files

and reinstalling i suppose is the best way to get a compy clean and set up the way you want it

501897 2006-12-06 06:33:00 Oh, I see what you mean

Yes, that is what I think

motorbyclist

all laptops come with that annoying power saving feature its what allows you to run your latop for more than 20 mins on a battery it only switches it down when you are not using the power
