501879 2006-11-25 14:08:00 Most work computers these days have more free space than used.
It is three years old. It only has 256Kb of memory so how big do you think the HD will be. Not that large. I still see XP boxes being sold by crappy outfits with only 256Kb so who knows. I personally think it is criminal to sell an XP box with less than 512Kb.

501880 2006-11-25 15:32:00 Plus make sure use a paid version spyware scanner like WebSweep or Lavasoft Ad-Aware. They're really effective.

I dont agree that paid is necessarily better than free at all.......spybot and ad-aware free are excellent and hard to beat .....i wouldn't bother paying for any other program .....

501881 2006-11-25 18:22:00 With only 256Mb of ram it is going to using a big swap file .

Actually do you know it makes a bigger swap file the MORE ram you have? Not a bigger one with less RAM?

501883 2006-11-25 20:33:00 just buy more ram, easy borax (7078)
501884 2006-11-25 21:00:00 sure buy some more ram but that still doesn't address the question of WHY the system is slower than it 'used to be'.... drcspy (146)
501885 2006-11-25 21:14:00 R2x1 - I stand corrected... it is infact XP Pro with SP2

It has a Seagate ST340014A 40GB HDD

drcspy - I also agree, these programs are great and free is even better :D

I have just installed Spybot and CCleaner and plan to run them and report back.

borax - Notice how I said I was thinking of upgrading the RAM? well I am going to, but as borax said it doesn't answer the question of why? and would like to know why so as I can prevent it if possible...

501886 2006-11-25 22:01:00 So I ran both Spybot and CCleaner, Spybot found 7 enties and fixed them and CCleaner was able to remove ~100MB of crap, but I am unable to see how much of a speed difference (if any) these made as I am remotely connecting to it to do these... The_End_Of_Reality (334)
501887 2006-11-26 02:52:00 Your trouble is obvious. You have XP Home, - - - AT WORK.
It is homesick.lol. Yeah might be and it sucks. I have one of those before so I quickly sold it out few years ago, it makes me reinstall the XP all the time. Pro? I don't really know but I know I got all the tools to maintain that window until suddenly bad sectors forming because of too much read/write. But I'm still waiting for Vista Ultimate. :D can't wait for new Microsoft OS, and this time better makes those pirate users pay for the OS.

501888 2006-11-26 04:29:00 If you are keeping it up-to-date on a regular basis?? Have you downloaded any microsoft updates recently??? I find that the microsoft updates do slow pcs down, especially if you've only got a small amount of RAM borax (7078)
