501827 2006-11-24 22:42:00 I have a hard drive that I bought as a 40gig hard drive, It is labeled 40gigs
.... BUT....
when I get the properties on it, it says the actual capacity is something close to 12gigs......

Someone else installed this drive for me and I never bothered to check the capacity until I started to run out of space.

This I know: the HD was not partitioned into two (that I know of) because there isn't another drive letter on my computer

Thanks for any help

501828 2006-11-24 22:49:00 What OS are you using? Is the drive new or second hand? It is possible for a drive to be partitioned, the "lost" part would not be visible unles that partition is formatted. Helplesss (272)
501829 2006-11-24 22:57:00 control panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - storage - disk management. Tell us wat u see there.. gum digger (6100)
501830 2006-11-24 23:04:00 It is possible that they did partition it and did not make another partition which is why there is not another letter/drive visible.

Go into disk management and see the disk there, there should be some unpartitioned/formatted space.

501831 2006-11-24 23:58:00 What I see in Storage is quite interesting:
===================================
Disk 0
Basic 37.27 GB
Online
------
Local Disk (c:) 11.72 GB NTFS Healthy (System)
------
25.55 GB Unallocated
====================================

So how do I get a hold of that unallocated space?

501832 2006-11-25 01:02:00 right click on unallocated space and create partition. choose fat32 or ntfs.

if you want to join the current partition with the unlocated then use partition magic. but first u need to create a partition outof the unallocated space. make sure it is the same filesystem as you current one.
