501640 2006-11-23 22:51:00 Hi Folks. Just thinking of adding a little more oomph to a couple of grandaughters' homework machines over the coming holidays. One is a 187 megahertz Cyrix M11 and the other is a 400 megahertz Intel Celeron. Both run Windows 98 with Word 2000. I can't seem to locate a simple schedule of how much memory each will handle. The Cyrix currently has 64 and the Celeron has 96.
Help appreciated.

501641 2006-11-23 23:20:00 Find out what the mobo brand/model is with Everest Home. Just dont go over 512mb / 768 mb since 98 doesnt support over 512/768 mb. Speedy Gonzales (78)
501642 2006-11-23 23:31:00 Also with the Cyrix, what type of RAM does it take? That was still the tail end of the EDO RAM era... and as far as I know you can't buy EDO RAM anymore. Erayd (23)
501643 2006-11-23 23:43:00 Win98 won't be stable with more than 512mb.
But thats plenty for WIn98 anyway.

And yes you can still buy EDO.

My supplier has PC66, PC100, PC133, EDO, FPM, RIMM, DDR Overthruster, DDR, DDR2.

Whatever FPM is....

501644 2006-11-24 00:19:00 And yes you can still buy EDO.Whoa. Hate to think of the price though.

Whatever FPM is....This (en.wikipedia.org 28FPM.29) is FPM.

501646 2006-11-24 00:29:00 Hi Folks. Thanks for your input to date. From what the kids tell me, it looks like both take 168-pin DIMM modules. Query... I have one such a module donated by a friend. It does not appear to have any obvious text on it, apart from a small oval containing the letters HJ and, outside the oval the letters M1. Is there any way of deciding the size of this item before I put it in to a machine? Scouse (83)
501647 2006-11-24 04:28:00 Whoa. Hate to think of the price though.

This (en.wikipedia.org 28FPM.29) is FPM.

Heh, yes....and sizes range from 4mb modules to 64mb modules.
Put it this way - an 8Mb is roughly the same price as a 256Mb DDR400.

501648 2006-11-24 15:05:00 dont worry about the size just stuff it in and try it it certainly wont hurt.......if it's non compatible for whatever reason the worst that 'll happen is a blue screen and windoze wont load it wont damage anything just remove it again..... drcspy (146)
