501265 2006-11-23 00:11:00 Hi all

My long suffering cd drive died (actually its been dieing since about 2 days after it's warranty ran out), any way I want to replace it with a DVD burner

What i want is

cheap (I really don't want to pay more than $100 at the very max)
reliable
speed of burning is not that important, as it will probably only ever be used to burn the monthly backup backups
I don't give a monkeys about blu-ray and whatever the heck the other one is, as i reckon it will be a while yet before that battle is over and the drives come down to within my pricerange
There was another point but I have forgotten it, so i'll have to think about it

I know I can look this up on the web, and I have had a quick skim of a few reviews, but as Is usual in these cases, i would rather cut through all the advertising double speak and hear from people who actuall use the damn things

Cheers

501267 2006-11-23 00:50:00 Asus DRW-1608P3S

Excellent burner and can be flashed with the Pioneer firmware to make it into a Pioneer drive if you really wanted.

I have the original DRW-1608P and have flashed it with the Pioneer firmware to enable bitsetting with DVD+R discs which gives greater compatibility on set top DVD players. It now shows as a Pioneer DVR-109.

501270 2006-11-23 03:11:00 Pioneer 110D. Fantastic!. very reliable as you know its Pioneer. gum digger (6100)
501271 2006-11-23 03:36:00 I moved from an Asus DVD ROM to an Asus 1608P2. The main reason was to eanble DVD burning, but also because the DVD ROM had started to be very picky about how scratched the discs could be. The 1608P2 is better, but it still picks up very minor scratches, esp when ripping CDs. If I were buying again, I'd probably not go with Asus, despite positive comments from pretty much everyone else... Lizard (2409)

Yup, the 1608PS3 supports burning to DVD-RAM as well. Altho, I havent got any blanks to try it out.

I wouldnt mind using/trying DVD_RAM, since the stereo here can play DVD-RAM as well.

LG = Goldstar.

Pioneer, ASUS or Liteon are all good brands.

I have 2 LG's and am happy to recommend them. They also burn every format you can think of.:)
