502434 2006-11-27 09:25:00 This has happened to me twice now Iwas wondering if any one had a logical explanation for it. i sit down start my modem & speakers then reach for the power button when i get to about a cm away (approx 1/3 in. for any old measurers out there) what feels like a bad static shock goes between my finger and the power button now whats strange is the computer starts up but not properly (ie my case lights and case temp gauge do not start) and it scares me so I swithed it off at the wall and then at the back of the comp i am taking it in for diagnosis and (most likely) repair (same as last time) luckily all my components were under warranty then and should still be now as it has happened within a few months of each other the first time , my mother board got fried so thats probably what will happen this time too

AMD 3200+
2GHz Processor
512MB RAM
120GB HDD
ATi Radeon X1600

PS: if anyone has a way of Id'ing the RAM (DIMM, SIMM, 333MHZ etc) could they tell me (planning on upgrading)

502435 2006-11-27 09:29:00 Welcome to PressF1. :)

Did you have the power supply unit in the case replaced last time?

Take the lid off and read whats written on it.

And I wouldn't be using the PC like that - definetly take it back to have it fixed.

502439 2006-11-28 16:52:00 You don't have a nylon carpet do you? Walking on one can cause a static build up in your body! I once got a nasty shock from one!!  Vince (406)
502440 2006-11-28 20:27:00 I got one of those before. The problem with mine was the extension cord was faulty.

Try different cable connections from your computer to wall power jack. Try different power supply.

Use a program like 'everest home edition' to find out what type of ram you have.

Even try right clicking my computer - properties - general tab, to see if it will show you info. about your ram type there.

502441 2006-11-28 22:17:00 As an ex-electrician.................. It does suggest to me , personal static buildup discharging thro the computer case. I also suspect an earthing problem. I always taught my apprentices, check the simple things first.

But you are probably correct in your own diagnosis anyway. PJ

502442 2006-11-28 22:52:00 I agree with PJ

It is not your compouter at all, there is nothing in there that can generate those voltages .

What is happening is that you are getting charged up with static electricity, and when you approach the computer (which is earthed) that charge leaps across from your finger to the on off button . It is probably discharging through the internals of the switch, which is why you are getting those odd start up issues . You are probably getting between 15,000 and 50,000 volts on your body to generate those effects .

If you are in a low humidity atmosphere (e . g . an air-conditioned room) or walking on synthetic fibre carpet (not just nylon) then you will build up quite a charge on your body . Your shoe soles are also important and if they are synthetic as well then that will add to the problem . You can prevent it from happening by discharging yourself before turning on the computer . Just touching the metal of the case will be enough, but use the heel of your hand, not your fingers because that way you won't feel the "bite" anywhere near as much .

For a semi-permanent cure, get some anti-static spray for carpets and spray the areas around your workstation . I have some experience in this area, having had to resolve similar issues for a number of companies and organisations .

Cheers

BTW, Warranty won't apply if you fry the internals of your computer with externally generated static, because the components were not faulty, you killed them . So, hope and pray that the service company knows as little about static as you do (meant in the nicest possible way) .

502443 2006-11-29 00:39:00 The static problem is why Techies "Earth" themselves with a wrist band/lead, or stand on an "Earth Mat". Have you considered an earth mat? A bit extreme I realise.

I also have the static problem, apparently generated by my own body.. I cannot plant seeds in the garden with bare hands. Very few will grow. If I go & touch the metal garage & use plastic tweazers I am much more successful. so I can sympathise with you. PJ :waughh:
