502320 2006-11-26 23:54:00 Hi guys,

I'm a bit perplexed about one of my computers downloading and surfing at a much slower speed than my other two computers.
The computer in question is the fastest of the three, and the closest of the three to the wireless router. Connection is 54mbps with excellent strength.
Using Xtramsn speedtest 9mb http file, download completed at an average of 84.5KBytes/sec and completed again at 68.8KBytes/sec
On my laptop (right next to the desktop) plugged in to power, the same test, download completed at an average of 193KBytes/sec. (48Mbps connection, Very Good signal strength.)
On my desktop which is further away, and has a 36Mbps connection, low-good signal stregth completed it at an average of 242KBytes/sec.
All using XP SP2 (Pro on laptop and desktop in question) tests completed with IE7.

The specs of the computers are:
Desktop in question - C2D E6300 @ 3.15Ghz, 2GB RAM, Gigabyte P965-S3 and a wireless b/g Gigabyte PCI card.
Laptop - HP nx8220 PM 1.73Ghz, 512MB RAM, Intel 2915 a/b/g.
Other Desktop - Athlon XP 1800+ (1.54Ghz), 256MB RAM, some random wireless PCI card b/g.

Wireless Router is a D-Link G604T/TX.

Is there any plausable reason as to why my 'fast' desktop fails to download at the speeds of my other two slower computers?
It may be of interest that I have Vista RC1 installed on a different HD on the desktop in question, but I wouldn't think that would be the problem (speed is around 80KBytes/sec aswell)

Sorry for long Post ;)

Thanks in advance,

Marmion

502321 2006-11-27 00:38:00 Are those speeds one-offs, or averages? Generally you should test from each PC several times and average the results - this will even out things like spikes in (telecom's) network load etc and give you a much more accurate result. You should also test them all at the same time of day - i.e. don't test machine A at 7pm, and then go and test machine B at 3am. Erayd (23)
502322 2006-11-27 01:17:00 I tested them when I was writing the post, but these speeds are generally what I experience all the time, so its definately not spikes in Telecom's network. Marmion (9274)
502323 2006-11-27 01:45:00 What kind of speed do you see when copying a file between the computers? If the problem is with your network (and not with your net connection) then you should get between 50 and 250 KBytes/sec for that as well. If your file transfers a lot faster, then the problem is not with your wireless. Erayd (23)
