502711 2006-11-28 04:38:00 I've tried Skype a few times over the past couple of years with disappointing results . I decided this time to try a more determined approach but the results are still less satisfactory than I had hoped .

Previously I had dial up and so I concluded it just wasn't a dial up technology, so I used the calling cards and currently the 054 facility with quicksilver . co . nz ( you dial 054 before the number on your phone and it costs 7 cents a minute in NZ or to Britain and the call quality is excellent) .

However, I now have Broadband (such as it is 3 . 5Mb down and 128Mb up) and the call quality with Skype is still poor - no duplex, so its ok while one person speaks but misses bits if both speak together .

Does anyone know why this is and what can be done about it? Would a higher upstream speed solve the problem?

Does Skype work well for anyone?

502712 2006-11-28 09:37:00 works well for me

i guess it also depends on who you're talking to
if the other person is on dialup then it probably won't work as well
people on my list also have broadband so normally it's pretty smooth for me

502713 2006-11-28 17:56:00 Fred, Skype has worked well for me, even when I was on dial up. Excellent, in fact. Also true for a friend of mine on dialup and his PC is old and underpowered.

What are the specs of your system and do you maintain it regularly?

502714 2006-11-28 18:00:00 Forgot to say - during the first 30 seconds or minute, the Skype connection (dialup) was not perfect. After that it was A-OK. Strommer (42)

I wonder if that's allowing time for all those other computers on Skype (nodes I think they call them), to kick in:confused:

I have mixed results with Skype; not too bad talking to UK, but absolutely pathetic trying to talk to my brother in Tonga .

502716 2006-11-28 18:14:00 Hmm, yes I have noticed it improve after a while too, also it seems the broadband speed should not be the problem.

I did have a couple of longer conversations yesterday that were okay my end if I didn't speak, in fact the sound quality was excellent, the problems were heard the other end or if I spoke the duplex was messed up.

I guess I'm trying to find out if there is anything I can do (eg faster upstream broadband) that would solve all problems but maybe that's asking too much at this time.

502717 2006-11-28 18:16:00 Yes, my best experience was calling Argentina and my worst calling Nelson (from Motueka - 40km away but a toll call nonetheless)! fred1 (3982)
502718 2006-11-28 18:33:00 Maybe it is a sound card problem, or mic, or other hardware...??? Strommer (42)
502719 2006-11-28 19:07:00 I call the UK on a regular basis and it is excellent. Calls to landlines within NZ are rubbish though. Im on broadband borax (7078)

That's most likely got something to do with the fact that Skype has not terminating switch in NZ. I think the closest is in Oz so the call route could be long..
