502365 2006-11-27 03:59:00 I am would like to be able to use at all older DOS based programs on an XP2 machine. I am wondering if there is anything else I need to do other than ticking the box for the run in DOS mode option. Doing just that doesn't always seem to be doing the trick. Any suggestions? 502366 2006-11-27 04:12:00 Windows XP2? That'll be the day. pcuser42 (130)
502367 2006-11-27 04:18:00 i think someone mentioned a prog called dosbox or something similar that can help a lot. XP only has DOS emulation ie some DOS commands work but not all hence not all DOS programs will work. tweak'e (69)
502368 2006-11-27 04:23:00 DOSbox works rather well.
You can find info and downloads Here (dosbox.sourceforge.net c2b8f74)

Another possibility, if you have DOS installation disks, or win98/98 etc, you could try using a virtual machine, and installing DOS/win95/Win98 to itt. Microsoft virtual PC does this, and its free.

i would give DOSbox a try first though.

502369 2006-11-27 06:27:00 The Compatibility option in XP works to a point, but the way XP locks certain addresses means not all old progs work becasue of that (and other reasons).

DOSbox - as has been suggested - rules!!! Brilliant little program.

502370 2006-12-18 02:22:00 I was also wondering how I can slow my computer down so that older games won't move so fast that speech can't be finished before the camera has moved on. Is there a remedy to this? MasterofZack (11276)
502371 2006-12-18 02:31:00 I use Microsofts Virtual PC (www.microsoft.com) to run any old DOS apps / games.
Works a treat

502372 2006-12-18 02:48:00 DOSBox has the ability to slow down apps or games that are running inside it. F12 I think is the keyboard shortcut while in session. Antmannz (6583)

Downloading Virtual PC as I type this.

I doubt very much that I could play Commander Keen using my current USB joystick. How do we go with hardware? Do I still have to connect a Joystick to my X-Fi sound card?

Not moaning. Just curious.

Probably a useful program anyway.

When the PC-AT came out in 1983, there was a sudden need for a"Turbo" switch on the front panel. This was not to speed the computer up; it was to slow the CPU from 12 MHz back down to 4.77 MHz so the games would run at a playable speed.

Should there be a movement to bring back the Turbo switch, so a 3GHz+ multi processor CPU will run at 4.77 MHz?
