502297 2006-11-26 21:55:00 I am going to upgrade my parents computer from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, in the hope of solving a video skype problem.

My preferred option is to wipe the drive and start again. However, their profile is full of "stuff". Plus I would need to reinstall all the applications.

Requiring the followings actions;

1) Full backup of their system data (on to .... CD's)
2) Install Windows 2000, so I can install the Windows XP upgrade.
3) Install Windows XP
4) Re-Installation of existing programs
5) Restore the old data.
(8+ hours of work)

Alternatively can I upgrade the 2K installation, and the programs already installed, may continue to run in XP and the settings in the 2K registry may migrate to XP registry.

Requiring the followings actions;

1) Install Windows XP.
2) Test existing applications.
(1-2 hours)

Or should I install it in parallel, so they can dual boot 2K or XP.

Requiring the followings actions;

1) Install Windows XP.
2) Install Applications.
(3-4 hours)

Which option is best. Who has tried this ?

NOTE: I have the Windows XP upgrade CD.

502299 2006-11-26 22:19:00 I know. But lately lots of programs only work on Windows XP. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
502300 2006-11-26 22:20:00 What is the Skype problem you're having? borax (7078)
502301 2006-11-26 22:38:00 When you select video, after the application was configured to recognise the camera, nothing happens.

However, it should be noted that Video calling is "BETA" accrding to skype.

502302 2006-11-27 07:57:00 From memory Skype video only works with win XP paulw (1826)
502303 2006-11-27 20:04:00 Best options would be to either backup the Win2k stuff, format & install XP or dual boot Win2K & XP.

Upgrading from an OS already full of "stuff" is just asking for more trouble.

502304 2006-11-27 20:29:00 If they are quite happy with 2000, have the disk space, and only need XP for one or two things (skype video) then I would dual boot 2000 and XP Myth (110)
502305 2007-01-17 00:35:00 Well I backed up the Win 2K system to a USB hard drive. Then installed WinXP over the top Win2K. It worked like a dream. All the existing programs and even Skype Video, which they wanted.

The longest time was downloading and applying all the updates and patches.
