502205 2006-11-26 03:24:00 I picked up two Hitachi HDS7222 250Gb Hard Drives from a friend who previously used them on his Mac. I reformatted both as NTSC and had them working. Then one drive (X:) dropped off the radar - it no longer showed up in my computer, device manager or disk management. It did show in BIOS but then even that ceased. A few hours later the other drive (H:) has stopped showing in Windows as well but still picks up in BIOS.

What could be causing this. Drive X: seems totally dead, refusing to even spin up. I've just backed up onto drive H: and would really like to have things working.

Having recently replaced the motherboard (identical) and upgraded the CPU from AMD 3200 to AMD X2 4200, I notice that the BIOS still appears to be the original F1 version. I have a floppy with F8 but am hesitant to flash the BIOS as last time I lost a partition in my RAID 0 and had to do major data recovery.

Could BIOS be the problem.
Or is the PSU possibly delivering too much/little juice?

Any other potential candidates?

System specs:

Mobo: GA K8NSC 939
RAM: 2 x 512Mb DDR400
CPU: AMD X2 4200+
PSU: Enermax Noisetaker 485W
2 x 120Gb HD running RAID 0 (OS on these)
OS: XP MCE

TIA for any help

502206 2006-11-26 03:33:00 Well I wouldnt rely on RAID 0.

Did u install the drivers (are these SATA hdd's)? during the install?

502207 2006-11-26 03:44:00 Speedy to the rescue :)

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The SATA drives are running the OS on RAID0

The drives H: and X: are IDE drives. The plan was to use one (H:) as a backup and the other (X:) for the OS. Unfortunately X: is not even spinning up in an external case now.

502208 2006-11-26 03:50:00 Have u just installed Windows?? And updated it??

So, X doesnt work when its in the case or in an external case?

If you've just installed Windows, (and if the SP if there is one for this version is installed), go to device manager and delete the USB controller entries and reboot.

You did install the mobo drivers didnt u? If u made this system up? Or did u buy it as a system.

502209 2006-11-26 04:04:00 No there is nothing new about this OS. I managed to resurrect it after CPU/mobo failure. I actually had both IDE drives working and formatted them. Then one fizzled out as described, then the other.

Neither one was used to run an OS. This was a plan for later. So my original SATA HDs in RAID0 are still running fine with my original OS.

The problem is with additional drives, one of which has the backup and the other of which was empty.

502211 2006-11-26 04:37:00 how have you go them mounted. what temps where they running at? tweak'e (69)
502212 2006-11-26 04:38:00 Hitachi Deskstar HDS722525VLAT80 ATA IDE 250 Gb

Two units of the above are in question here. They were previously used in external enclosures on a Mac notebook. But they did work on my machine briefly...

502213 2006-11-26 04:43:00 In terms of mounted I'm using a Thermaltake Swing case, they are in the side mount (the connectors facing side of case). There is plenty of airgap and I'm running a 12cm air intake fan right in front of them, so I don't think heat is the issue. They are about 20 degrees C to the touch at a guess - slightly below lukewarm. Refinement: make that "it". Only the H: drive is plugged in now, as the other one appears for all intents and purposes deceased. digikiwi (10681)
502214 2006-11-26 19:29:00 Is it possibly my PSU? If I want to test its Voltage levels on the cable I used for the hard drives - what are acceptable variances ? Assuming my Dick Smith multimeter is up to the task. digikiwi (10681)
