502951 2006-11-29 10:43:00 ok so i only just found out about this, i always use to think that the games i played just didnt use more than 600-700mb's of ram, but when i was recently just checking random things in taskbar, i right clicked nvidia logo and went to ''About NVIDIA settings'' and it comes up with:

i12.tinypic.com

so im guessing, the other 400mb just never gets used since no game, and im talking bf2, bf2142, cod2, css, company of heroes etc do NOT use more than 600ish mb's of ram when i check in task manager.

so, whats up? why is this the case, is tehre a way to make my other 400mb be used by appz that demand it? thanks.

502953 2006-11-29 21:26:00 whats your swap file (virtual memory) set at? tweak'e (69)
502954 2006-11-29 22:44:00 You do realise your O/S antivirus etc use memory don't you?

A game can never use 100% as a portion of your ram is required for other system overheads which is perfectly normal.

502956 2006-11-30 06:06:00 And all of the normal Windows components, never underestemate how much RAM is in use and how many things are using it, I have 400MB in use in Windows as well The_End_Of_Reality (334)
502957 2006-11-30 07:08:00 ..i only have 200mb in use at idle, sometimes 220mb, why cant the other 800mb be used by bf2142? jesse_jax (9283)
502958 2006-11-30 07:30:00 There are very few programs that run under Windows capable of using the RAM as you want them to.

Hence for many applications 512 MB will suffice, little gain is seen for 1 GB.

To address your question would reguire that we know how BF2142 is coded, only the authors know that. The words "system stability" come to mind though.

502959 2006-11-30 07:32:00 hmmm... well its kinda stupid tho isnt it, 300mb's of ram is never used, ever, the most ive seen used is 700 something..:badpc: jesse_jax (9283)
502960 2006-11-30 08:36:00 I just fired up BF2142 and mine uses 640MB of RAM (out of 2GB), how much RAM a program uses depends on the total installed and generally will not use all the available memory.

Side note... I love BF2142, just got it, it uses 75% of a DC CPU and runs at 1600x1200 FULL MAX settings at at 50-60fps on a single 7800GTX, that is really good for such a new game...
