502916 2006-11-29 04:36:00 Hi all. My husband had a new iPod (and 74.3 Gb of iTunes back up on my PC). I have just bought an external hard drive to provide back up for both that and my numerous photos.

What are the problems - and of course the solutions to these problems with changing the location of the iTunes files from my present G Drive to the new external hard drive?

As always, TIA of your help. :)

Cheers
R.M.

Hi RM - what you are saying seems to contradict itself . You talk about backing-up then changing location . Why do you not leave the tunes where they are and backup to the external hard-drive ??

502918 2006-11-29 07:31:00 Sorry . :( I didn't mean to contradict . I DO want to change the location of the iTunes files on my computer (which are the backup for the iPod) . They are currently sitting on my hard drive for my photos, and I would like to put the iTune files onto the new external hard drive .

Somewhere I seem to have picked up the idea that just a simple shift may cause problems with the iPod finding the files if/when I change or update them . That is really the question I am asking .

502919 2006-11-29 08:15:00 I am cautious and have a back up of iTunes on my external drive. This means that there are the tunes on my iPod and then the hard drive, backed up (actually part of an image, but that's another story) on my external hard-drive.

When you are thinking of making the change to just having on the external hard-drive (and the iPod itself) is that because of shortage of space overall ? If so, fair enough !! --- However, if you have lots of space at the moment why not be cautious, you have nothing to lose.

Sorry, if I am not responding to what you asked in the first place, just being sure you have thought it through fully :nerd:

502920 2006-11-30 06:55:00 Just reporting back. I found the answer in iTunes 'Help'. One has to go to Edit, Preferences, and then there is a box to change the location of the files. I played safe and copied the files over first, then changed the details in iTunes, and then, only then deleted the original files. All is well.... R.M. (561)
