503439 2006-12-01 02:44:00 Hi all,

Long time reader, first time writer.

I want to go to a wirless router/modem and would like to know what people would recommend for the following queries-

My current set up is a desktop with a 3.4GHz AMD64 bit and a Mac G3 powerbook.(i know it is naughty saying that on this web site). We have only recently joined the broad band fraternity but have modem or router yet as i am purchasing one so i don't have to go on a fixed contract. I didn't like the feel of the free modems and routers.

1. - Is it worth going for a MIMO router.
2. - If MIMO is the go, is there any all in ones or is it best to go for a 2 pot system ie - the dlink DI-634M router with a 502 modem.
3. - It i was stay away from MIMO for now so as to fill the gap till 802.11n hits the mainstream, am i best to go for a combo system (seperate modem and router) or one of the combo babies?

any help, advice, do'd, don'ts and others experiences would be grand.

peace out, g-units

503440 2006-12-01 03:35:00 I know nothing about routers etc coz I'm not on broadband .

BUT, I do know that with some ISP's, it doesnt matter whether u get the free modem, when u sign up, or buy it .

The contract still applies . You'll still pay if u decide to opt out before 12 mths .

There are some 802 . 11n devices out now, but theyre pretty expensive . About 200+ each .

503441 2006-12-01 03:53:00 I would suggest a Linksys WAG54G (www.ascent.co.nz) and personally if you are only going to be using the wireless for the BB then there is no need to go for 802.11n because 802.11g is fine, but if you really want to... I would suggest the Linksys WAG54GX2 (www.ascent.co.nz).

Note I suggested all Linksys? that is because Linksys is good... D-Link is bad... NEVER buy D-Link, I have one of the stupid DSL 302gv2 and it crashes 3+ times daily :groan:

503442 2006-12-01 03:57:00 I think on BB if you don't want contract, you buy your own modem which is not bad b/c if you wanna router modem wireless or even a router modem the upgrade to up by the customer after a free basic modem, its around the same price anyway, such as the Dlink types in store (the free modems or upgraded are generally Dlink or Dynalink).

You will need to pay connection fee.
How I see it is if you strike a good company least you save a $100 or what it is for free connection, so I would just go for a contract, if you pull out you pay $100-150 but hey you got a free 100 connection and a 60 free modem, even if you put that in the wardrobe you still had the free connection.

There are N series card and its a bit more than the G types, you should get better speed at networking but b/c the internet is slow enof already there won't be any broadband difference by just buying a more expensive wifi card. If any difference its b/c the N card may have a stronger reception so you get a faster speed but my guess it may not even be obvious.

Which doesnt apply for Telecom, I emailed them, and asked this question, and they said no, u buy a modem you'll still pay $90 / whatever it is, if u decide to opt out.

Yup I didn't mean it as that. I meant that if a person not get a contract, you can buy own modem and $100 connection fee. If a person wants contract then all you get is a "crappy" modem free and a free connection fee but if you pull out $90 will apply but there are not any exceptions. Either you take it all up or you go without a contract.

I still think since you pay $90 to opt out (for Telecom) least it saved you $100 connection fee so its not bad going into a contract "in that way". So biff the "free" modem (not the upgrade) in the wardrobe or smash it up, up to you.

503446 2006-12-01 07:08:00 D-Link is bad... NEVER buy D-Link, I have one of the stupid DSL 302gv2 and it crashes 3+ times daily :groan:I beg to differ. D-Link routers are utterly useless. But if all you want is an AP, in my experience D-Link is a fairly impressive performer. I currently have a DI-524UP - rock solid stable, and impressive performance. Current uptime of 146 days - it hasn't been switched off since the day I bought it. Erayd (23)

Well that maybe so, I admit I have had no experience with D-Link wireless stuff, but the modems and routers I have used and all have been crap and crashed all the time and all sorts The_End_Of_Reality (334)
503448 2006-12-02 12:13:00 Linksys.
If you already have a modem you just need an accesspoint like a WRT54GL or a WAP54G.
Otherwise get a linksys or a linksys.

I have tried D-Link, TPLink, NetGear for wireless, I would rate these as rubbish, I have set up plenty of wireless networks and only use linksys nowdays.
