504024 2006-12-03 21:05:00 I do not have a cd writer and wish to download Puppy Linux. Can I download it and use a zip disk instead of a cd? worl (8599)
504025 2006-12-04 04:03:00 The problem is that if you download a CD image file it is just that: an image of a CD, and is meant to be written in raw mode to a CD . RAWRITE . EXE is provided to write bootable images to floppy disks . "Copying" an image file to disk (as a MSDOS file) does not make it into a Linux boot disk .

Some one might have written a similar utility for writing boot images to ZIP disks, but I doubt if a CD image would work if written to a ZIP disk . CDs are not FAT disks: they have a very different file structure .

A Google search might find a way to do this, but I think the quickest way to get a bootable CD for Puppy Linux would be to get a friend to do it . Try bribery, or blackmail .

504026 2006-12-04 07:02:00 This (www.linux-magazine.com) article might be a good place to start (sorry, it's in a PDF).

Of course, if you're only wanting to run Puppy off a USB stick, but not necessarily boot from it, maybe a Puppy VMWare virtual machine (www.puppylinux.org) would be what you need.

504027 2006-12-04 20:13:00 Thank you Graham for the explanation and suggestions you gave, and Antmannz for the pdf article on the usb stick (the 2nd (virtual machine) link was forbidden to me).
I have found this link:
www.icpug.org.uk
which gives a step by step guide to dual boot Windows and Puppy. The Puppy install is poormans/frugal (which hopefully will be quite fast on my 466mhz machine) and does not require a cd.
