1409722 2015-10-12 21:38:00 Hi Team

I have misplaced the 12v plug-pack for my Seagate external storage drive. This in itself is not a big problem because I have plug packs for Africa, but there is no polarity indication on the Seagate drive so choosing a replacement poses a risk. I don't want to dismantle the enclosure just to check the polarity, so I'd be grateful if any member out there who has one of these drives could take a look at their plugpack and confirm that the centre pin is positive.

I have a 12 volt supply here labelled ELEMENTECH which might in fact be the original unit, but that has no polarity indication either, however I have established that the center-pin is + .

Cheers

1409723 2015-10-12 23:45:00 Billy T, I have a Seagate Free Agent Desk 500gig external HDD (mostly all white) and it also is not marked re polarity, but looking on the Power Supply, which is the original, it shows the centre pin as positive 12 volts.

In my experience the centre pin is always positive on this type of power supply, although I have seen a few oddball ones in the past the other way round.

The biggest risk is putting an AC rather than DC supply on if you are rushed for some reason or another.

1409724 2015-10-13 03:08:00 OK, thanks zqwerty all good, the anonymous wall-wart was the right voltage, polarity and plug size, so all data was safe.

Better safe than sorry, as I needed to recover stored data from an old court case to reprise for another client in Oz.

Cheers
