1409488 2015-10-06 01:26:00 Theres LOTS of people having problems with it. The causes are also greatly varied. Theres a mountain of suggested fixes, but unless the right fix is auctioned for the right fault then its a wasted exercise.

One that Will cause it is if you use something like Classic Shell, as the Start menu gets altered and this update alters the "default" start menu.

One common repair that's 50/50 if it works is open a CMD as Admin, run sfc /scannow then try the update again.

Failing that - you're more than welcome to quote my sig at any time :)

Observation: that command gets used more in the last few months to fix W10 screw-ups than all the previous OS ever needed.

1409489 2015-10-06 01:44:00 I downloaded it from the windows catalog site. You have to use IE to get it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1409490 2015-10-06 22:52:00 I have now got updates turned off in W10 pending all this crap being sorted out! I have work to do, can't be bothered waisting time doing reluctant updates when it is working well as it is. mzee (3324)

1409492 2015-10-07 00:15:00 Interesting. I have Classic Shell installed and this update as well.. Classic Shell is only one known cause for the problem. Its like a lot of these W10 updates problems, while some wont have any problems others will.

Some have also reported that Eset's Nod32 or Smart security can cause it, I've had no problems with PC's that run Eset and the Update, where as I did have one that did error and had no third party AV at all.
Thats why I mentioned "Theres a mountain of suggested fixes, but unless the right fix is auctioned for the right fault then its a wasted exercise." There's no one cause.

1409493 2015-10-07 02:01:00 Just completed sfc /scannow only to find that, Windows found corrupted files but couldn't be fixed!

This is my spare computer, it has done very little other than Windows updating - meaning that Windows Update broke their own system.

Speedy: Where did you download the update manually, any link?

1409494 2015-10-07 03:14:00 Here (catalog.update.microsoft.com)

You have to use IE to use that site

Click on add on the one you want / then view basket then click on download

Then select a folder to download it to

1409495 2015-10-07 03:19:00 Just had three of these errors today (3 Different Computers).

1st was fixed by simply rebooting and trying again.
2nd sfc fixed it,
3rd even though sfc didn't find any faults still didn't work, so downloaded the offline installers, and went right in.

After installing and rebooting on opening windows update it still showed the failed attempt, but rerunning removes it.

BK you can get them from kb3093266-download-offline-installer-windows-10-cumulative-update.html (www.softpoint.in) Make sure you get the right one for your OS version Eg: X86 (32bit) or X64. Scroll down the page to the Links.

Have checked their linked address and they are pointing to Windows updates

1409496 2015-10-07 07:16:00 Downloaded and installed the standalone Update from your link. Restarted after the installation still showed the error but restarted again fixed it.

Thanks wainuitech and Speedy.
