1409267 2015-10-01 04:26:00 A friend (same age as me) is worried that his monthly data usage has gone up from about 4 GB per month to 22 GB last month. He's about to head overseas and thought he might be leaving a hacked wifi to his house sitters.

I told him it might be Microsoft uploading Win 10 but would check with you guys.

His usage has a lot of upload in it. He's got Win7 and Win8.1 computers and gets nagging screens about installing Win10. He also gets "failed" messages on Windows Update. I don't know whether it's failed because he hasn't pushed the button on installing Win10 or whether it's something else that hasn't installed. He gave me this info by phone. I haven't seen his installations

He would like to turn off the data usage if possible

1409268 2015-10-01 04:47:00 I also had the same problem, ended up having to disable automatic updates, & Telephony. Also disconnected the Internet when not being used. They are using your broadband to upload to other computers. First I would check all the partitions for any new files, mine had about 2.5GB of them. There is a way to turn it off but I forget what it is. There are a couple of Guys on this forum who could help. You could also Google it. mzee (3324)
1409269 2015-10-01 05:05:00 I have found the patch as follows:-

Search gpedit.msc Enter.

In the Group Policy window navigate to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates ->
Network -> Microsoft Peer-to-Peer Networking Services and open Turn off Microsoft Peer-to-Peer
Networking Services. Enable.

1409270 2015-10-01 06:05:00 Mine is set to only upload to local computers and I can confirm that this is exactly what it is doing, it is not sending any updates over the internet. I monitor our usage very closely. I think your being paranoid personally. gary67 (56)

Couldn't find it on my machine but found this on Google:

"Group Policy Editor is a feature in Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Windows 7. It does not belong to Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium."

Which leaves me out as I have Home Premium. :(

He is not being paranoid. Before I stopped P to P at least 80Mb would upload every night unless I switched off the modem. If it wasn't Microsoft it was someone else.
