1409174 2015-09-29 23:39:00 Yesterday I made the mistake of trying to install an AMR file converter, from CNET.
Win10 alerted me to malware so I stopped the installation. I was not sure if Win10 actually
removed anything so I ran Malwarebytes and it found 179 PUPs, and all of my browsers had
Treasure Trove search. I ran Malwarebytes 4 times because each time it kept finding PUPs
even though I selected Quarantine and also Remove. Treasure Trove search was gone but
I did this manually using browser Extension controls. This morning I ran Malwarebytes again
and it found 6 PUPs; a second scan found nothing.

Yesterday SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot found nothing (missing the PUPs) and today
Win10 Defender found nothing.

Question: Are AdwCleaner and JRT (Junk Removal Tool) legit, good programs?

BTW I think PUPs are not actually malware but crapware or bloatware, but even so I
don't like them on my PC. Also I did sort of know that CNET had issues and could
not be always trusted, but I decided to give it a try anyway :-(

Thanks.

1409175 2015-09-29 23:43:00 They are both good - get them from bleepingcomputer. wratterus (105)
1409176 2015-09-29 23:56:00 Yep,very good,guarantee both will find more

With cnet it would have added other crap with what you wanted

1409177 2015-09-30 01:01:00 I wouldnt get anything from Cnet AT ALL. Get the wrong installer, it'll infect your system

If whatever program has a site, use it. Don't use some dodgy site like Cnet, Download.com or filehippo

1409178 2015-09-30 02:13:00 Thanks for the replies. I went to bleepingcomputer to get AdwCleaner, ran it and while no PUPs
there were a few registry items that I chose to delete. A further scan of Malwarebytes found nothing.
Yes Speedy I thought I knew; thought if I chose to opt out of Nortons and anything else that was
in the Custom Install that it would be OK - egad though I did not expect that huge number of PUPs
Usually I go to the original programmer's site but yesterday I had a brain fade...

1409179 2015-10-01 20:52:00 Yep, it's damn hard to keep a perfect record when downloading.

But your no. of PUPs is nothing - I have seen over 900!!

1409181 2015-10-02 02:25:00 I have just run AdwCleaner in 2 computers which had already been cleaned by Malwarebytes & Defender. I was surprised at the junk which was found. I then ran Ccleaner and it found some more which it didn't before. Both machines are working well, W7 Pro & W10 Pro. mzee (3324)

Wow, that must be close to the record! Any more and the comp wouldn't run I'd have thought.
