1409163 2015-09-29 22:01:00 Updated my BIOS to fix a problem that caused Win7 to hang in splash screen after installing a program. Updated multiple times but it didn't solve the problem, instead created a new one. Now my PC hangs for an hour or so with a solid red busy light, very randomly. It happens in 5, 10, 20 mins or even an hour later. I've reseated my cards as I read that could be it, but no. It also happened once in startup repair after a bad startup so it's not just Win7 - it usually takes 5-10 mins but this time it added another hour. Everything in Win7 just stops except the mouse, sometimes I get a message something is hanging but I can't do anything about it. Forced to hard reset.

I've tried moving the SATA cable to another port, won't start in any other port though.

Motherboard: Intel DH61BE on bios 111. Started with v36 and updated to about 5 or 6 since. Started getting the hanging from v99 which was a major update apparently. I've updated to v109 and v111 now, only got worse since :badpc:

1409164 2015-09-29 22:13:00 Dont use a beta BIOS if this is what you've done. Theyre beta for a reason

Sounds like a windows / hardware prob if it hangs in windows. It may even be a stuffed hdd. Or malware

1409165 2015-09-29 22:16:00 I've only used the official updates, no betas.

I've done multiple scans in Seatools and they've turned out fine so I don't think it's the HDD. If it's hanging in the Windows startup repair I'm not sure if that's really Windows or not, I guess it might be.

1409166 2015-09-29 22:36:00 Sometime the official bios updates have bugs
sometimes they arnt even the correct bios update for the device: Ive had that, it made the PC unusable , had to get a warranty replacement.
both rare & unlikely

Failing hard drives can pass all the tests you throw at it, just the way things are . Failing hard drives could cause the symptoms described

If you can, try another hard drive, load a clean Win7 install on it .
Or just wipe & reload.

1409167 2015-09-29 22:41:00 Does it hang on the post screen if/when you reboot?? If it does this will be a hdd prob

How long does it take to get into windows?

I might consider wiping and reloading as a last resort. I'm looking at buying a new cpu/mobo anyway.

No hanging on post screen. Not long to boot to windows, 30-60 seconds I guess.

1409169 2015-09-29 23:15:00 A linux live Disk or flash drive is the easiest way to confirm if the hardware is working ok without re-installing anything. You can just boot into linux and use it for a few hours and see if it's stable.
Linux Mint 32 bit is a good option if you've never used linux and have older hardware.

1409170 2015-09-30 02:22:00 Updated my BIOS to fix a problem that caused Win7 to hang in splash screen after installing a program. :

Highly unlikely it had anything to do with the BIOS.
Now you have 2 issues.

Flash it back to the old BIOS then troubleshoot the windows problem.

1409171 2015-09-30 03:22:00 I read updating BIOS fixed the problem for another user with the program that caused the startup hangs (EVGA precision X). Changing from selective to normal startup in msconfig did work instantly, but it started coming back slowly after every 3rd or 4th boot, needed multiple reboots to get past the Win7 splash hang.

I can't go back to the old BIOS either, won't downgrade from 99 as that was a major update.

1409172 2015-10-01 21:43:00 Just to update, it was hanging every 5-10 mins in the morning, but after that it was fine for hours, didn't happen again. It's usually only when I first start my PC after being off overnight, as if it needs time to warm up, then all the problems go away. Could it be caused by moisture in the room maybe? Vicx (11114)
