1401142 2015-05-22 00:50:00 I recently bought a wireless door chime online from eBay, received the item 2 weeks later but only to find that it is not working at all -D.O.A !

Contacted eBay for a refund and they requested that I must send back the faulty item with tracking to the seller before I can claim my refund.

Problem is:

1. The wireless door chime costs me NZ $8.80 - free shipping.
2. Just checked with NZ Post, sending the parcel back (to China) with tracking is going to cost me NZ $47.13

What will you guys do in the above situation?

1401143 2015-05-22 00:57:00 At that price just write it off. Pull it apart and see if you can repair it. I don't know how the postage can be so cheap from China. Just bought a digital thermometer/hygrometer, less than $6, free postage from China. Terry Porritt (14)
1401144 2015-05-22 01:07:00 Explain to the seller. I have found they prefer direct contact about issues with themselves first, as they don't want negative feedback. They may send another item. Happened to me. kahawai chaser (3545)

1401148 2015-05-22 03:37:00 You're put off of purchasing online because you lost $8.80? Alex B (15479)
1401149 2015-05-22 03:50:00 Yeah, I now lost $8.80, tomorrow I may lose $88, and day after tomorrow ... who knows how much will I lose??

Won't buy online unless absolutely necessary.

Well I've bought a few things from China via DX.

Had a couple of utter lemons, cost me ~$10 each time. Also had some incredibly great value items. Think of it as a risk - there's a slight chance you'll get a lemon, and a good chance you'll get a great value product.

Stick to buying low cost items and you'll usually be fine, as the odd loss won't be too bad.

1401151 2015-05-22 23:04:00 Buying from overseas is something of a lottery, even with sellers you trust. I just bought 4 circular saw blades from USA at approx half the price I would pay for one in NZ, and received them at least 6 weeks quicker too. Shipping from USA was only a couple of dollars dearer than the quoted cost for NZ shipping. If I wanted to return any one of those blades, it would cost the same within a dollar or two for freight as it would cost to buy three blades and have them shipped 1/3 of the way around the world. The blame for that lies with the bloated cost of New Zealand infrastructure by the time it hits the end user.
If you want to drop out of the game because you could lose, then don't vote at general elections, - you are guaranteed to lose not only money, but a whole lot more.
