1409259 2015-10-03 20:37:00 My Win7 machine seems to be getting slower and slower booting up, 3min 15secs from Power-On to all desktop icons to be precise.

Any thoughts?

Yep, I had that when my hard disk was failing

1409261 2015-10-03 22:08:00 Well this turned out to be an interesting exercise. :D

I went to download this programme Bootracer as suggested by aspattv, but before doing so checked the system with Malware Bytes, Superantispyware, Nod32 and run CCleaner and came up 100% clean.

Anyway, before the download the link to Bootracer It suggested I run PC Mechanic to check if there was anything obvious, so I thought on the off chance I’d try it.

Well, I couldn’t believe it on the first run it found 219 issues so I run it again and it found 224 issues. Really, so I pressed the Backup and fix issues button (I’d already backed everything up) and wouldn’t you know it I only had a Read Only version and my Credit Card details were required. Not likely.

So that was the end of that, I uninstalled it via Revo and during the uninstallation I get directed to a webpage offering me PC Mechanic for ½ price. No thanks.

Having got rid of PC Mechanic I thought I’d run Malware Bytes again and lo and behold I find I now own 5 pups, two with the same name PC Mechanic. Grrrrrrr!

Euthanasia fixed them and we went back to the programme in question, Bootracer, which had some favourable reports. Nothing sinister here but the boot time shown was much quicker, as you can see below, than my manually timed 3m 15s which was taken from the moment the Power button was pressed to the time all the Icons were up on the desktop. As you can see I’ve restarted the computer a number of times but unfortunately little or no improvement, so it’s back to square one.

1409262 2015-10-03 22:49:00 I think you made it worse, by installing PC Mechanic.

I would get rid of PC Mechanic if I were you. It looks like it's a Uniblue program which is a dodgy company. Most / all of their programs are crap

And do absolutely NOTHING

And I would avoid installing 3rd party programs, which will probably make your computer worse

1409263 2015-10-04 01:06:00 Yep, never, never download so-called fixit progs unless they come with impeccable reps and you can guarantee they won't have little friends that accompany them. linw (53)
1409264 2015-10-04 02:31:00 Way back in the W98 days I was sure there was a program that you could run at startup that showed everything that loaded and exactly how long each one took.
Is there something similar for W7, 8 etc?

Ok, ran chkdsk /r just to cover everything and got an interesting report (Below) but no change to boot time. Seems some of the disk was marked used when it wasn’t?

Ran Ashampoo HDD and also got a clean bill of health.

And was going to run defrag but wasn’t worth it as it’s scheduled to run once a week anyway.

I still think the clue here is all the desktop icons come on and then go off leaving blank boxes before returning randomly over a minute or so.

Got me licked. :D

1409266 2015-10-04 15:37:00 Not sure what you did?

I go here . greatis . com/bootracer/download . htm" target="_blank">www . greatis . com

click English and it starts to download

not sure where you got pc mechanic from (its junk you don't need)

The speed result seem to indicate your boot time is ok!
