2015-05-10 00:08:00 | Yeah obviously, but by which... Android or Samsung? My understanding is that it is the Android OS that gets upgraded. On "Google made" tablets like my Nexus 7 (manufactured by ASUS) and Nexus 9 (manufactured by HTC), the manufacturers have not messed around with the Android OS the way Samsung does. So when Google comes out with a new version of Android OS, it is delivered to "their" devices very quickly - it just updates on the fly. When I had a Samsung tablet, it was months later (if ever) before Samsung released an update to Android OS because they had to mess around with the raw OS to work with their devices. And the updating wasn't an automatic process - I seem to recall I had to run some kind of Samsung updater. So in the case of "Google" phones/tablets, Google sends out the update; in the case of other Android devices it is their manufacturer. Plod said it is the cell provider - if he meant it is the cellphone/tablet manufacturer, he is partly right (as I understand it). If he meant the cellphone service provider (e.g. Vodafone, 2 degrees etc), then that is incorrect.

2015-05-10 13:21:00 | Just received a notification to download Lollipop on my Note 4. Has anyone updated their Note 4 yet? How did it go? Anything special I need to do beforehand or afterwards? Would like to hear experiences before taking plunge... Upgraded both Note4 (5.0.1) here this week, seems to have upgraded without a hitch. Be warned, it is a huge download I think 1.2GB or 1.3GB; make sure you're on Wifi and not mobile data and plug it into the charger before doing any major upgrade. It was weird that one of the Note4 got an upgrade alert but mine didn't, I went to check manually and it was there. Both Note4 was bought together, so not sure why one got the notification but mine didn't. Apparently it's also available for the Galaxy TabS (overseas) but it is not available on mine when I checked manually. It seems a bit faster since the upgrade and some UI changes a bit "colourful" compared to before. I did lose Wifi earlier this evening, I thought it was the routers playing up (again), but the other Note4 in the house was working fine on WiFi, so just rebooted phone and all is well again. Apparently there has been some reported Wifi issues out there and memory leaks. www.gottabemobile.com play.google.com

2015-05-10 13:49:00 | By the way, Lollipop finally gives us back full access to the external SD card, yay! Such a pain before with KitKat not being able to write/move/delete files on my extSD using my favourite file manager (ES File Explorer (play.google.com)). I had to resort to plugging it into my laptop when I want to mass copy or delete photos/videos/movies etc. It appears Apps need to be adapted to the new API to be able to access the extSD, but luckily ES File Explorer has. Just followed the steps in this page (droider.eu) and it worked. The instructions did pop up within ES File Explorer before but I just couldn't read the tiny screens, it is much clearer on that page.

2015-05-10 21:53:00 | Geek4414 - thank-you so much! This is very helpful feedback, thanks for providing the links too. I have yet to update, and since posting this have been wondering if I really need to... My Note 4 runs like a dream and does everything I want it to on KitKat. It is fast, and I've not had any problems copying or deleting files on my SD card. Unless Lollipop provides a whole lot of security fixes I'm wondering if I should even bother. The "don't fix what isn't broken" saying comes to mind! | catspyjamas (15614) | |
2015-05-10 22:54:00 | Here is a walk through of the KitKat vs Lollipop UI on the Note 4 ... www.phonearena.com www.ibtimes.co.uk The biggest problems with Android 5.0 Lollipop bgr.com www.computerworld.com One thing I do find a little annoying is that some notifications now pop up in a box on the top of the screen instead of just scroll through the status/notification bar. "Elsewhere in his piece (www.computerworld.com), Raphael criticizes the heads-up notifications feature that was designed to give you notifications that let you take actions without having to open up apps. We’ve seen other Android users complain about this and Raphael has similar criticisms about the way that it forces you to either act on a notification immediately or wait 10 seconds for the notification card to disappear." 6460 Latest Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop OTA brings in new features, fixes bugs www.sammobile.com Just found something, but not sure if new to Lollipop ... two-fingers drag down the notification bar, you get all 21 quick toggle icons on one screen, instead of the two clicks.
