1400870 2015-05-18 02:32:00 I've got some 40+ years old super 8 films that I want to have converted to digital.
Checking with Google, there seems a number of firms in NZ that say they can do the job, most claiming their work is excellent.
Problem is, since it's not the sort of thing one does very often, how to know who does a good job of the conversion at a fair price.
So, just checking to see if anyone here has had any experience with super 8 conversions.

Where are you based? I'm about to use the Wellington photographic supplies, who don't sound like the cheapest, but for volume do discount. I've not seen any resulting work though for comparison.

1400872 2015-05-18 04:06:00 I'm in Auckland.
Just hoping not to go too much by guesswork when deciding who to get for the job.
I do have an old super 8 projector that hasn't been used for 40+years and which I might be able to get going.
But digital, either DVD or preferably .avi or .mp4 or whatever files would be a lot better.
The old tapes cover maybe about 4-5 hours of filming and I think their condition ranges from OK to not very good.

1400873 2015-05-18 04:25:00 A quick Google search (www.google.co.nz) brings up several options for doing it yourself. Greg (193)
1400874 2015-05-18 05:39:00 A quick Google search (www.google.co.nz) brings up several options for doing it yourself. Most (all?) of the results in your link seem about converting slides or negatives to digital. I've done a lot of that myself and it's not what I want in this case, which is to convert super 8 (movie) film to .avi or .flv or whatever.

There's some stuff suggested on some websites about using a super 8 projector (if one can find a working one) to project onto a blank wall or white screen and then record on a cine camera (which I may need to buy. This requires specific, and for me additional, equipment and seems to produce not very good results.

I was checking to see if anyone here had used a NZ firm that uses the TK (or telecine) process or equivalent for the super 8 conversion and if so what the results, cost and service are like and maybe any recommendations.

I appreciate your suggestion, but Google isn't very useful for getting that sort of information.

1400875 2015-05-18 07:56:00 I've used this company in Wellington before . Excellent work on my old 8mm and Super 8 movies. They scan them in 720P HD format .mov for you..

1400876 2015-05-18 08:16:00 Sorry, I didn't look at the links properly. My mum had all her old cine 7 films converted by an outfit in Auckland, which were put onto a dvd. The results were very acceptable. Unfortunately she's no longer alive and we don't have a clue who she used. I'd suggest you do a search of places in the Yellow Pages. Greg (193)
1400877 2015-05-19 02:22:00 ... I'd suggest you do a search of places in the Yellow Pages.Really I wanted to see if anyone's used a particular firm, and what their impressions of the cost, service and quality of result are.

Yellow Pages are useless for that purpose. In addition they're usually out of date and don't have very complete information.

I find the best source to initially get info on which to proceed is the internet, usually starting with Google - NZ searches over the past year. Anyone who's any good is likely to proclaim themselves on the internet with a website and up-to-date info. Some who aren't that good, or even decidedly dodgy, do this also of course so one needs be judicious and I try do be.

Asking on this forum tends to give pretty useful and reliable responses, hence my opening post.

1400878 2015-05-19 05:57:00 During the 80s/90s, I used to get NTSC tapes converted by Robertson Video Centre in Te Atatu. Quality for that was decent. The link off here no longer works though www.localist.co.nz but looks like they're still around yellow.co.nz Renegade (16270)

Your latest link says they started in 2013 so that could be OK.
80s/90s is a long time ago and presumably better technology now.
I would also suppose that NTSC would be easier to make a good job of than super 8. We'll see.
