2015-05-07 21:30:00 | Often. Background: Sons GF moved some time ago, 76.8km from his work - cause the rents were cheaper out there. Yeah they are, by $100 a week. He bought a car and followed, crashed the car, didn't know at the time but he had damaged the radiator. He put stop leak in it. 3 weeks later he cooked it on the motorway. I told him, you can't overheat alloy motors. And stop leak is put it in, drive to shop, buy new radiator - the same day. Not drive around for 3 weeks. He put water in it at the time it overheated too - even worse. Anyway after replacing the head, having various bits sealed (oil seal etc) it was up to using 2 litres oil day, water and oil mixing, and I told him to give up, sell it to the wreckers and buy another. He did. Both these cars were funded by a personal loan at the bank. No problem, he could afford it. Then he discovered GF was deep in the poo with her car loan - she'd got hers some time ago from the loan sharks. It had increased and finances were going to ****. He took over her loan by adding to his, and now pays all the bills, she just hands over most of her pay. Great. Sorted. However, he does well over 100km a week, GF takes his car often too (she does shifts). Because of the shifts and his need to leave for work at 5am, they take the child to the other nana for childcare. She charges them. A lot. Meanwhile car gets up to 380,000km. He has replaced the clutch, the engine mounts, 3 wheel bearings, 2 cv joints, forget what else.... Gearbox starting to be noisy now. car using oil a bit - and water. 2 months ago he bought 4 new tyres. He had one rim fixed, it was bent and stuffed one tyre - so another tyre $125, plus the rim straightening was $160. Then there was a new problem, turned out to be suspension arms. last week, he replaced suspension arms and buy 2 more tyres - because the wobble had worn them to the metal. Then he rang to say vibration was worse. Get mechanic round again, turns out his rims (the other 3) are stuffed - it had mags on it when he bought it. I say give up, put original wheels back on it. He does, and gets 4 more new tyres. (11 tyres in total now). he spent $790 in 1 week on it. I say move. Car going to die, too many kms, cost of petrol, car, childcare - actually cheaper to live out this way and pay $100 more rent. Get free childcare too. I say you'll ring up, car dead on motorway and then have to stay here to be able to get to work. GF will have even more childcare costs cause you not there. End up being a complete disaster. Good idea he says, just got to come up with enough money for moving costs....rent in advance, bond, letting fees, moving truck etc. Can't borrow anymore cause loan too high as yet with GFs added to it, can't buy another car either for same reason, working on it... So yesterday he phones, car on motorway, temp gauge hadn't moved, but the engine cut out. Overheated. It's been towed back here. He's going home for the weekend, thinks car will be fixable. Well. Thats what happened to my last one. Temp gauge never moved and it fried itself in the Waikato, engine cut out, dead - well economically. I now have another car. So mechanic coming round today....I see replacement heads, litres of oil and crap coming up again. Like I said, whos dumb idea was it to move 76.8 km away? He's doing about 55,000 a year....even a Corolla motor will give up sooner or later.

2015-05-07 21:41:00 | Step son is fighting with ACC to get a operation for a laberal tear to his hip. In the meantime his GF leaving Uni got hit from behind by a girl from her class texting pushing GF's car into the one in front total write off. They go to her folks for the weekend he runs over the family dog in boys 4WD. Dog survives just cost the family $3k at the vet. Then GF's laptop dies with all her uni work on it, its winging its way to me via courier today. yesterday stepson was in the shower at his flat and someone came in and stole his wallet off the kitchen table. It's like WTF the can go wrong next.

2015-05-07 22:16:00 | @pctek Sounds like Son's GF is taking him for a ride. The amount he's spent on the Car he could have bought a reliable run around. Why would you move 76.8 km to save $100 p/week? Don't see the logic in this, unless public transport is available. An AT hop card monthly pass (covering Auckland) is $190.00. Loads cheaper on gas and car repairs. If a car has done 380K it's pretty past it's use by date... No sympathy for bad life choices. No offence, just saying. @gary67 That's just rotten luck, in regards to the ACC, laptop and wallet. Do they have insurance for the car? I'm all pro-pets/animals but 3k? Personally would have put the pup down if I were in the situation. :2cents:

2015-05-07 23:36:00 | The temp gauge often doesn't move because there's no water around it for it to sense the temperature of..... Anyway these messed up situations are the only way some young people learn. You can tell them, they don't hear it. Once they've lived it themselves though understanding sometimes dawns. Most of us get wiser with age, we forget we also may have done things our parents advised against in our youth. When I was young I moved a lot (normal when renting) and destroyed a lot of engines, partly a function of foolish behaviour and partly due to the old bombs I could afford and the mileage I did. It's part of growing up. My Mum was always a very practical and sensible person, and being kid no# 5 (of 6) she had it pretty well sorted by the time I was a teenager. The stories of what my older siblings got up to though.....

She sure is taking him for a ride now....have to bring him into work Monday... We did get 650000 ish out of our ute before it decided it had had enough...I thought he might get 400,000 out of the Corolla, he may yet, see what mechanic says...but 400,000 is doing well. The old Cambridge used to need a new motor at 100,000 miles. Gary67: Yep....funny how it all happens at once ay. Like I said, **** happens....often. |
