| 504826 | 2006-12-07 06:19:00 | Hi there Guys and girls . I have a mate who is having trouble with Windows Media Player . We can get sound but no pictures on an assortment of videos . WMV, AVI and others . I believe that this has been installed by a corrupted up date from windows that tried to install itself and then hung . How can I remove all codes and then replace them with another package . System is running Windows XP, Windows media 10 with a windows media player 11 update . I have removed all media programs and updates and tried to get it back to Media Player 9 but nothing seems to work HHEEELLLPPPP!!!! Please post your thoughts and ideas . Anything appreciated . Tim |

Also, I've heard quite strong advice against installing a general purpose Codec pack. Just FYI. I have no opinion. :-) Cheers, MistyCat |

Thats quite possible, but the other player that's included - Media Player Classic - does not have any Adware and is an excellent alternative to Windows Media Player. General purpose codec packs can be great since you get all you need at once, but can be a pain if you install any codecs that you don't need and may cause playback problems. I have not had any major problems with K-Lite pack over the past few years and there was no spyware or malware detected - just make sure you get it from a reputable site :) |

Then play the video in it, and make sure she's connected to the net,cuz if media player can't find the codec it'll download it automatically. If it can't,right click on the file, and choose "error details" and it'll tell you what codec is missing. then type in the missing codec in google and download it. |

| 504835 | 2006-12-11 01:08:00 | autechre, I'm not knocking K-Lite or the GSPlayer . I found the player had more features than many others, and there wasn't much missing from the Codec pack . I'm on Win98 so I stay away from the more advanced WMP versions . I like WMP Lite and Classic . When I strike a codec problem I've found that GSpot is the most useful way to get details . (I haven't tried much else, though, because GSpot did all I wanted . ) I put a shortcut to GSpot in my "Send To" folder, just to make life a little easier . If I had something that supported the latest Media Players I'd be only too happy to let the system look after the details for me . Under Win98 I have to do some of the houskeeping myself, and I'm no video expert .
