504625 2006-12-06 09:12:00 I am currently running Microsoft Windows 2000 Operating system. My computer randomly freezes and on occassion restarts itself (very seldom tho'). When I run task manager often the entire computer frezzes and then I cannot switch my pc off. This generally happens while using Microsoft Office 2003, but also happens while working with other programs. I have done a full virus and spyware scan but nothing has been detected. I also took my computer away to a clean environment and ran theses scans and have still not picked up anything. We are running from a 2003 server and all the pc's in the office running with Microsoft 2000 are having this problem. The Microsoft Windows XP computers seem to be running fine. Can anyone shed some light on this. Please, Please, Please!!!!! alayne (11582)

504628 2006-12-06 09:35:00 this may sound funny, check the config of your virus checker if its set to scan all files change it specified extensions because want maybe happening is when you open an application it will scan all files associated with it and if its run from a network share........... I hope you enjoy coffee:), this may appear as hung pc beama (111)
504629 2006-12-06 09:40:00 lol, thank you beama,

i am not overly clued up on pc jargon. i am not 100% sure what to check for?
what you are saying does kinda make sense as if i waite long enough (yes, i do like coffee) the programs do start running eventually.

504630 2006-12-06 10:46:00 Hello alayne, welcome to PressF1 :)

I suggest you post us a HijackThis log. HijackThis quickly scans a users' computer and creates a list of differences from a known spyware-free environment. You can obtain a copy of HijackThis from the following website:

www.merijn.org

After creating a log, paste the content into this thread and sir Speedy will analyse it for you. Alternatively, you can have it analysed over here -> www.hijackthis.de

Have you tried defragmenting your hard disk drive?

Cheers :)

504632 2006-12-06 13:43:00 Looks like a lot of junk in there that shouldn't be. A better analyser than me will give you some advice on what to delete.

But... I suspect your main problem is hardware based - eg your motherboard may be stuffed, or your RAM may be half fried. What's the temperature indicated by your BIOS temp monitor?

504633 2006-12-06 14:19:00 Hi Greg,

where would I find my BIOS temp monitor?
alayne (11582)
504634 2006-12-06 15:38:00 Hi Greg,

where would I find my BIOS temp monitor?Run your PC for a few minutes to get it up to heat .

Reboot, and while it's starting up hold the Delete key on your keyboard . This will start it into the BIOS .

Once there, depending on your BIOS version, you'll find a menu to navigate your way to something that will show the CPU's current temperature .

Just play around there and follow the on-screen instructions . Once you've found your current CPU temp, exit (esc) all the way out without saving, and allow the computer to restart .

Then report back here what temps the BIOS reports .

If the above is too confusing, advise us what BIOS type and version you have, by pressing the Pause key just as the first screen shows on startup .

Make a note of what's on the screen and report back .

Good luck - I can't be certain that your problem is an overheating issue, but it could well be . If that is established, then we'll know what further checks should be suggested .

ps - what part of Cape Town you live? I spent a couple of happy years there .
