505277 2006-12-09 04:51:00 Ignore it, Someone is throwing out big words and numbers to prop up the fluff posted earlier. None of it applies. Metla (12)
505278 2006-12-09 04:55:00 Metla says you need a separate graphics card - not the built into the motherboard one you have.

I'd agree as my father has only 512mb and runs Photoshop fine. He does have a separate graphics card - although not a particular new or powerful one.

But its better than onboard graphics.

So get Metla to install one.

505279 2006-12-09 05:29:00 I had pretty much the set-up that Pctek's dad had and ran graphics progs (with really big files etc) no problem with 512 ram and a GT5200 video card. You should allow the graphics prog to a large chunk of memory as 'swap file' so things don't slow down when working on large files. Shortcircuit (1666)
505280 2006-12-09 05:31:00 Come on people, I did ask for simple English. This is Simple Poppa John you are talking to !!! PJ
Maryann, now, is much more intelligent, & better looking. PJ

Well this does not tell me which photo manipulation software is being used and what for. This is a simple question in English for which I have not yet received an answer. I don't think you are dopey or stupid.

You appear to use an onboard graphic card and I took the time to notice you have an AGP slot in which you put another video card. AGP will presumably fit.

Large chunk of hard drive space as a swap file I think. Even its own partition.
Different to memory or RAM.

Maryann says it is Photoshop Elements 2. Does that help? We also have Picassa 2. PJ

505283 2006-12-09 07:06:00 What size Rams do these graphics cards have on them? PJ. Poppa John (284)

Can't say that I ever said it was the same as ram

And to try and answer PJ's last question, most of the cheaper graphics cards I think have about 128mb of on-board memory with the more expensive ones 256mb. It is my understanding (and I'm sure Pctek or someone more knowledgeable will clarify it) that more graphics card memory is really only useful if watching/converting video... and won't make much difference when working with photos or images.

505285 2006-12-09 08:50:00 Tugging my forelock in the direction of Metla who is obviously a computer guru, I do wonder whether he has the time or patience for image manipulation. If you're using images from a 4 or 5 MP camera in Photoshop Elements, with layers you can easily be tying up 750 MB or more of RAM dedicated to Photoshop. Therefore having 1GB OF RAM installed is of real benefit and Maryann would notice the difference. Pretty cheap these days too. Shortstop (632)
505286 2006-12-09 08:53:00 The benifit is that it free's up the system ram and removes a chokepoint/ bottle neck, anyhow, I have a card that will suit and I told PJ this a week ago.

The real problem isn't what the PC needs, Just that I haven't yet managed to walk the 54m between our houses and actually do it....
