505582 2006-12-10 12:32:00 Hi all,

I have a very serious problem here are my specs;

OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU: AMD 64 3 . 0 Ghz
RAM: 1024mb
HDD: 120gb Maxtor
DVD/CD: VOM 8x DVD/ 52x CD
Motherboard: ASRock K8 Upgrade - 760GX (integrated graphics card)

Problem: In the past few weeks my computer has been randomly switching off, usually when i am running AVG virus scan but more recently whenever there have been a few programs running . I have tried leaving the computer on just from start up and same thing happens after about 20 mins without warning the computer just switches off . I first noticed this problem about a month ago when id come home from work to find the computer off, not thinking it was serious id just start up again and leave it running over night . Ive updated everything and the problem just keeps occuring .

Has anyone had similar problems? If anyone can suggest something or requires more info please ask . Could it be due to running 32bit OS with 64bit processor? Do i need a new OS? Im totally clueless on this one .

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Aniel .

505583 2006-12-10 12:54:00 After reading around other forums people with similar problems have been advised to check the heat sinks and cpu fans - question what is average life span of the fans and heat sinks, as ive had my computer nearly 2 years now? aniel (11596)
505584 2006-12-10 13:06:00 Could it be that when your system has to cope with a lot of programs and their demands on system memory and the processor, it just shuts down or I would say your have a temperature problem and the computer is shutting down to protect itself. beeswax34 (63)
505585 2006-12-10 13:53:00 Hmm it cant be the processor being overloaded as i used to run alot of processor intensive programs at uni and no problems .

I just thought somebody might recognise a known issue with temperature of cpu, does this usually cause a shut down without any warning messages or even the normal xp shut down screen? It just switches off - kaput nothing .

505586 2006-12-10 14:48:00 Found this if anyone has had similar problems, the motherboard supports auto shutdown incase of overheating;

www.digit-life.com

So i think best solution is get the heat sink + fans changed.

505587 2006-12-10 19:24:00 Or it could be a dodgy PSU.

To test if it is overheating - take the side off the case and direct a fan toward the MB and run it like that.

I doubt it would be overheating somehow....

505588 2006-12-11 12:19:00 if the heatsink doesnt work then ill try the PSU, thanks. aniel (11596)
505589 2006-12-11 21:16:00 I have just had a PC that does this excat thing. It turned out that it was overheating, the cooling fins on the heatsink were full of dirt. If you go into windows event viewer and see if there are any errors in there, if not it might be the bios shutting the PC down. Next time it does shut down, restart straight away and then go into bios/windows and see what the temp. readings are.
Quite a few years ago i had another PC doing this and it was something entirely different, i had a USB device that was pulling too much power, in the end i bought a powered USB hub and plugged it into that, which fixed it.

Good luck, your prob might be one of the above or might be something else :badpc:

Does it say "Windows is starting up . . . " while booting?
THAT is your warning that failure is imminent . :badpc:
