505829 2006-12-11 04:48:00 This PC hangs at different stages at different times while loading XP Home. Performed Window Repair using the Home CD but did not correct the problem. Able to start in Safe Mode and run Hijackthis and sent the logfile for analysis and deleted some entries but still doesn't correct the problem.

The HDD is partitioned into C: D: , important data are stored in D:

Since can't rectified the problem, have then decided to performed a clean install of XP Home. Strangely, the install process does not detect my partition D: only C: is 'visible'. Stopped the install process as I do not want to lose my data in D: .

How do I make XP's install wizard see my D: partition?

Cheers

505830 2006-12-11 08:40:00 From a Linux user perspective - I would be checking my HDD/RAM/PSU for faults before reinstalling my OS. The solution for Windows users always seems to be "reinstall" (too often?) johnd (85)

The symptoms do not look like it's hardware related - correct me if I'm wrong. Now, my problem is, how to get XP's install wizard 'sees' my partition D:

Any ideas out there?

505832 2006-12-11 08:50:00 I may be wrong but it may only see the C:/ partition because that is the first option for a fresh install of xp and also that is where it detects your current xp partition. It should just fresh install onto C:/ and the D:/ should remain intact. If you wanna be certain take the HDD out if you can and chuck it in a mates computer to back up the important data. 505833 2006-12-11 11:02:00 I don't see how the install not seeing d: as being a problem. How large is the C: partition? And the D:? When running the install, have a look at the storage capacity of the partition, that the install disc is 'seeing' as C:.
Does this storage capacity seem right?
As advised, if you aren't sure, back the D: drive up before attempting the new install onto C:

505834 2006-12-13 08:28:00 Just to share with everybody in this Forum:

Borrowed from a friend his XP Pro CD to perform the Installation and the D: appears as expected. So, can I conclude that the original install XP Home CD is somehow faulty? Possible to get a replacement from MS?

505835 2006-12-13 08:50:00 A re-install of xp home only makes my PC detect c-drive, which is all good, because then I know the other drives are left alone.

Perhaps the XP-pro detects all the drives? I guess there must be a reason why it's called pro...

505836 2006-12-13 16:39:00 hm........never seen that one before ......i've installed both xp home and pro on numerous occasions on many different puters and as far as I recall the install process will always 'see' any/all existing partitions.......it's not some sort of home - versus pro issue at all..... drcspy (146)
505837 2006-12-13 19:13:00 Just make sure that the size of the C: partition that is picks up is what you set it to (not thet whole HDD size) and also check that the remaining is equivelant to the D: partition, not sure why it does not see it... The_End_Of_Reality (334)

Ive done reinstalls using XP Home, and it can see all drives (and partitions) that I may have at any one time.
