505697 2006-12-10 23:57:00 Hi, i have just put together an older system to help out a neighbor, from the 2 old sys's they had. All went well, clean install of win 98se, all drivers except "USB Root Hub", which didn't entirely surprise me with win98, i have done heaps of research over weekend and tried "alot" of things to solve this to no avail. At the end of the day after trying so much, i still believe its down to driver? The only updated usb root hub driver i can find from 2 locations, points to windows update, when i go to windows update its not available, no mention of it, can't find a manual download anywhere for it either.

I have tried uninstalling usb root hub, rebooting etc to reinstall, updating from win cd, doing various supposed fixes to restore files, checked bios settings, irq conflicts etc all to no avail... i have pretty much tried everything i can find online to try, so hopefully somebody, with better knowledge of win 98se may be able to advise me on other reasons.

ERROR:
The NTKERN.VXD device loader for this device could not load the device driver (code 2)

The only reference to updated drivers suitable for win 98se are the same drivers "USB Root Hub 5.0.2183.1" , that should be on windows update, but aren't from

Here (www.soft32.com)

and

Here (www.versiontracker.com)

Any ideas greatly appreciated thanks :)

505698 2006-12-11 00:04:00 I would find out what the brand / model of the mobo is as well.

And hopefully, the drivers are still around for it.

Or try this (support.microsoft.com)

Or this (support.microsoft.com)

505699 2006-12-11 00:36:00 Thanks Speedy, but unfortunately i have tired those solutions, along with alot of other things to no avail . . . i should have added in my first post there are no usb mobo drivers (Hot Shuttle 675) supposedly necessary, the win 98 ones are the ones to use . System is a (Shuttle hot 675 mobo with Intel i440bx chipset), i appear to have all the correct drivers for the chipset, its just the usb root hub - i am starting to wonder if the usb port is actually the problem, maybe its dead?
I would really like to get hold of some updated win drivers as mentioned earlier .

Thanks

505700 2006-12-11 00:40:00 Are the USB ports USB 1.1 or 2? I would say USB 1.1.

And I would also check and see if USB is actually enabled in the BIOS.

If the USB is onboard.

505701 2006-12-11 01:09:00 Yup definately USB 1, and as mentioned above i have checked BIOS settings, the only 2 places its mentioned are "enable usb keyboard" and "assign irq to usb", both enabled. Tried checking in case there were any conflicts with irq however nothing is using same irq chanel so no conflicts seem apparent.
I have tried everything i can possibly think of/find over last couple of days, to no avail...

505702 2006-12-11 01:20:00 Try deleting the USB entries in device manager and reboot. See what happens.

Cant think of anything else.

Unless I had 98 se installed. Altho, I've got the cd. Unless the cd / drivers you've got are stuffed somehow.

I would buy a PCI USB card, see if it works then, at least it'll be USB 2.

Unfortunately i am way past that point ;) .

Yes, pity i didn't have another win 98se cd to try and retrieve the drivers from just in case, however it seems to be a common problem with win 98 and usb root hub drivers from all the googling i have done unfortunately .

Thanks anyway :)

505704 2006-12-11 01:41:00 Have a look here:

www.usbman.com

There are a couple of USB updates that can be downloaded there for Win98SE, that may help things along.

505705 2006-12-11 02:18:00 Thanks Terry, i had the first update on that page, but not the second - just my luck, the second one can't be downloaded, forbidden access. Will read a bit more on that page though.

Thanks
