| 506111 | 2006-12-15 04:33:00 | Hi dchip Ok...I guesss this says something about my level of inexperience. I had trouble at step 1- partitioning my existing drive. Currently my laptop has one partition NFTS with about 17gig of 29.something gig. When I bring up the partition programme....how do I actually do the partitioning.....do I resize the NFTS partition and how? ie what selections do I make from the menu bar? Cheers Smurf |

| 506112 | 2006-12-15 05:58:00 | k, np. First of all make sure any of you important files are backed up. Secondly run a dfrag in windows before doing the partitioning. Okay, so if I understand correctly you have a 30gig drive and it has xp installed and is currnently taking up 17gig? Which leaves about 13gig to play with. So when you open Gparted it show's the whole drive as one partition with xp on it. If you click on the partition to give it focus you'll notice some handles appear at ether end, grab the handles on the right and drag them to the left. As you do that you'll see the size changing. I would make that partition about 20gig....leaving about 10gig of free space after it. Now click on the "apply" button to make the change. (I find when using Gparted it's best to do one change at a time) When the change has been made click on the "unalocated" space to give it focus. Then click "New" , at which point you'll be asked what size to make the new partition and wot file type it should be. Make this one your linux swap and the size you want is about 500mb. Once again, apply the changes before moving on. Now you should have two partitions ( xp partition = 20gig & linux swap = 500mb) and the rest of the drive still unallocated. Repeat the creation process this time make the new partition "ext2" file type and around 2gig size...this will be for puppylinux. (apply changes before moving on). Now you should have three partitions and some unallocated space left....create a new partition with the remaining space, this time make it "fat32" ....this will allow you to use it for windoze or linux so you can share files between os's. Now, If you have reached this point okay...reboot the machine from the puppy cd and begin the puppy install...when it asks where to install puppy, chose the "ext2 2gig partition". (btw: chose "normal" as apposed to "coexistant"). I'd rather have made you a nice tut with screenies and stuff but I don't have time atm...but may get round to it tomorrow if you need it. For now have a go at the partitioning and I'll check before I go to be tonight to see where you're at. Good luck, may the source be with you. |
