507088 2006-12-16 07:13:00 I have a 200 GB HD with 3 partitions. C drive and D drive have XP operating systems installed. The other is a storage drive. I want to format D drive. I went into disk management under My Computer and it shows the drives but the command to format is greyed out. How can I only format this drive to install a new operating system? Do I have to put the XP disk in and boot to that drive to get the option to format? I want to make sure I don't format the wrong drive also. Thanks for any help.

507089 2006-12-16 07:20:00 Go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management.

And see if the rest of the hdd is here.

Depending on what OS you want to install if its earlier than XP, its better to install the earlier version, then XP.

Or is it Vista you want to install? If its Vista, just boot from the Vista CD (a clean install), and select D as the partition to install Vista onto.

507090 2006-12-16 18:32:00 That's where I was, in disk management. It won't let me select 'format' from there. I'm wanting to format XP and put a clean install of XP back in. That's why I was wondering if the XP disk would give me the option to format and re-install a particular drive. I don't want to end up formatting C instead of D. iguana (89)

507092 2006-12-16 19:09:00 That's why I was wondering if the XP disk would give me the option to format and re-install a particular drive. It seems straightforward enough to simply try it, so long as you don't select the wrong drive letter. Greg (193)
507093 2006-12-16 23:01:00 Yes, it was straightforward. Set the bios to boot from CD rom. XP listed all the drives on the computer and gave me the options to delete/create partitions, format the drive, and install XP. Worked with no problems. Thanks for all your input.

507095 2006-12-17 05:22:00 Thanks for that brilliant piece of wisdom kjaada. I thought this site was meant to help people, not to flame them. Which, by the way, I never did get a definitive answer to my original question. I still had to try it for myself to find out for sure. So where were you with all your infinite knowledge kjaada?? And what exactly is a kjaada anyway? Maybe it's some type of small insect with a bigger mouth than brain. iguana (89)
507096 2006-12-17 06:01:00 If you still have a problem then download Gparted which is a brilliant partition manager linux based but it works in all OS's.It is well worth while having it in yr emergency kit.gparted.sourceforge.net/ kjaada (253)

Yep, for safety reasons you can't format the Windows volume from inside Windows, which is why you had to boot from the CD.
