2006-12-18 07:11:00 | I can't get dialup networking in W2k pro to work on my new computer. I've configured DUN so many times over the years I thought I knew how to do it, but this time it won't go right. It was fine on the old computer with W2k, and with the same modem. It dials up to my ISP (Paradise) with no problems, but hangs on "verifying username and password". I am quite sure the username and password are correct, and there is the same lack of success when trying my alternative ISP (freenet), where it also hangs on verifying username and password. There is an eventual error message about re-booting the computer because of the "changed configuration", but of course that is no help. I've been through the DUN config many times, changed various things, but still no success. Checked with the tech notes about DUN at the Paradise web page, but nothing came out of that. The only thing different in the new computer is the new hardware of course, and that W2k has SP4, whereas the old computer had only SP3. Does anyone have any thoughts please?

2006-12-18 08:36:00 | I had this problem myself once after I installed a program that wouldn't uninstall properly. I seem to remember going into recovery consoles command prompt mode and disabling some services which I could not disable through control panels services. It was a networking thing. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2006-12-18 08:41:00 | check MS basics, like flow control too! support.microsoft.com Ok, I've disabled all the things they suggested, but there was no difference. At the end of a 30 second or so wait while "verifying username and password" is displayed, the error message is "error 619: the specified port is not connected" Is that of any help?

2006-12-18 09:11:00 | You got the correct driver for your modem? Good question . I was using the driver that came on the floppy disc with the modem, but I have since then looked around on the web and found one that was reckoned to be for W2k . Installed that with high hopes, but it made no difference . The modem is an E-tech E56 RVP external .

2006-12-18 09:18:00 | Try a diff modem. Win2k is easy peesy, I have win2k 99 to now and all you do is click new connection add the phone # and login straight away. It has never failed me in this time. Only issue for me is Clear Net dialup is crap and they have problems or redialling now and then but apart from that and certainly last yr and before it has worked without a issue. I had issue with modem which was fixed with a swap. I say, if it still not work after some hours or overnight then I think its the modem or the drivers. Is password and login correct? Can you login to check Paradise webmail fine? Are the drivers supplied on disk with the modem quite old? Maybe its not for Windows 2000. Has this modem ever worked before properly? Try to locate newer drivers online and install that. If you can try to avoid Windows drivers, I had problems with them.
