507726 2006-12-19 05:46:00 Hi guys,

I'm a bit of a noob so I'm asking for some help of how to upgrade my wife's laptop to make it faster again:

Don't worry about all that hardware expense. Just paint it and add speed-stripes to the side.

507727 2006-12-19 06:03:00 Depending on how you've been using the pc, a clean reinstall of Windows might help in addition to the extra RAM.
Only after you have updated your antivirus and antispyware software, run scans, and then backed up all the files you want to keep, of course.
You'll need copies of the 'drivers' for the laptop, and the Windows OS CD's or restore disks...

507728 2006-12-19 20:05:00 How old is your wife's laptop?

Its about 3-4 years old. I did a complete re-install of XP about 2 years ago because she never had any antivirus on it and it was completely gone to the dumpster.

I have used ccleaner, defraged, cleaned registry and I have already experienced a better performance. New memory will be installed this weekend.

507729 2006-12-19 22:41:00 I guess depending on what she mostly uses it for like email, word, web browsing and maybe a bit of Excell on the side 3-4 years is at the "ok but starting to become frustrating stage" If you wife only views the lap top as a "tool required for completing tasks" then there is probably no reason why 512MB of RAM and and a Chip upgrade with possibly larger HD shouldn't solve the problem for under $1000 with a re install of XP with inclusion of required antivirus etc (from all current reports I have read Vista is nothing to get excited about for at least another year) Read Juha's report from PC World below

However if your wife really wants to enjoy her computing experience, be productive and creative and not have to worry about viruses, trojans, hackers or more kludge on her machine in 6 months time get her an Intel MacBook so that she can discover what enjoyable trouble free computing is really about.
Good luck.:)
