507810 2006-12-18 22:06:00 Hi
I have a 4 year old computer lying around... Sometime when i start it, it takes long time to detect hard disk, "Detecting Primary Master..." and then it gives the usual disk error " please inssert the disk bla bla bla"

I am guessing the hard disk is dying but how sure can i be?. Is it really dying.

I ran HDDLifePro and it says the Health is OK! and Performance is Excellent!.

And then reinstall whatever on it.

I didn't say it did, I said connect it to see if the BIOS detects it.

The BIOS has to see it before Windows sees it.

Then format it, it maybe corrupted or there maybe viruses etc on it. Why its not working.

Hmm maybe you shouldn't connect it, it may infect your system. If there's nasties on it somewhere.

Check and see whether the hdd's / cd's are both on Master or slave. If they are, jumper them properly.

And make sure the cd's aren't on the same IDE connection as the hdd/s.

507815 2006-12-19 01:12:00 HDD is on Primary Channel as a master and CDROM is on Secondary Channel as Master. Do i still need to change the jumpers?. gum digger (6100)
507816 2006-12-19 01:17:00 HDD is on Primary Channel as a master and CDROM is on Secondary Channel as Master . Do i still need to change the jumpers? .

But is the jumper on the hdd on Master, and the jumper on the cd on Slave?

I would also make sure the virus option in the BIOS is disabled .

BUT, if u found a virus, that maybe the cause of the prob . . The hdd maybe full of spyware / malware .

507817 2006-12-19 03:21:00 Either the drive is dying or the motherboard is.

Having a problem detecting it will be hardware and nothing to do with the virus. The virus doesn't affect detection of the drive...............

Thats what i was thinking too. But as speedy said does HDD - Primary master and CDROm - Secondary slave?.

I was under the impression that if you had one optical drive on the secondary channel you made it Master as well. You only have slaves when you have more than one device on an IDE channel.

Is that right?
