509192 2006-12-24 09:18:00 I've got an hp pavilion ze4500, 3 years old and the battery won't charge.
Are there any good ways to tell if it's battery or charger that's at fault?

509193 2006-12-24 09:28:00 What charger? CMOS batteries don't last forever. Are you talking about the CMOS battery?

If you are, go into the BIOS, and if it's not saving the settings, replace it.

509194 2006-12-24 09:31:00 Sorry, should've been more specific. Laptop battery. jcr1 (893)

If it won't even go on mains power, the charger is probably kaput.
This is a pretty poor test, but without meters etc, it gives a fairly good idea. Substitution is of course a great test if you have a friend with a similar laptop.

509196 2006-12-24 22:01:00 Thanks, works fine on mains power, which made me think initially it was battery. But not too sure..... jcr1 (893)

509198 2006-12-25 04:39:00 3 years... you are lucky. My first laptop battery barely lasted 2 years (HP)

509199 2007-01-05 00:54:00 I got a new battery.
Got it through Amazon.com; it came from Utah:eek: But only took a week to get here and still a lot cheaper than Noel Leeming quoted. It's charged up and working, wonder how long it'll last:lol:

Considering the expected replacement cycle of laptops these days, 3 years for a battery is quite good. If they made them last much longer than that no one would need to buy any replacement batteries which makes for bad business sense ;) .
