508943 2006-12-23 18:32:00 I buy a 250gb Seagate Barracuda ATA HD lastnight. Well this morning i attempt to install it. Well the first time i tried to install it i ran the software that came with the HD and it supposedly formated the HD. Then i attempt to begin installing WinXP pro. After it installs the setup files and reboots, i get the message Error Loading OS. So i figure it was prob my disk scratched or dirty so i clean the cd and begin installing. Well Same thing again Error Loading OS. Well after 4 hours of screwing around i finnaly disconnected Power Supply and removed the lil batter and let it set for a while. Came back connected the battery and powersupply used the windows setup disk to format the HD and created a partition of only 50g, just so if it screwed up again i wouldnt have to wait forever and a day for it to format. And it installed windows and everything was cool.

Well now i cant get anymore disk space other than the 50g i originaly set the partition. Now im stuck with only being able to use 50g of a 250g HD. I have tried to use the diskwizard and it wont help me resize and take up the extra HD space because its telling me there isnt any space on the harddrive only the 50g i set it to. Plus since its my boot drive it wont let me do anythign to it unless i reformat and join the monkey dance all over again. Even Partition magic is telling me there isnt any more hard drive space on the drive other than the 50g in the partition. Now before i uninstlal windows and have to redo everything. IS there any other way to get that unused disk space back or am i just stuck like chuck and should head back to reformating and installing?

508944 2006-12-23 18:48:00 First your motherboard needs to be able to support a large HDD, I guess it can't be too old to, so on to the next step.
You need SP1 or SP2 to support larger than a 137Gb drive.

Make sure you have that done.

Then right click on your MyComputer icon and choose manage.
Select Disk Management from the list in the new window shown.
This shows you your drive and any unparitioned space.
Clcik the unpartitioned space and create whatever new partitions you want and format them.

508945 2006-12-23 18:57:00 MB is less than a year old, i have SP2. I went into the disk management however it as well is telling me that the drive is only 50g big and no unpartioned space so i dunno whats going on. if i make a copy of the C: drive go back reformat and repartion the space then load all those folders and files back on the HD will windows still work correctly? 508946 2006-12-23 20:06:00 Make a copy how? You would need to make an image of it using Ghost or Acronis True Image.

Check the BIOS detects it as the correct size first.
Then boot off the Win CD, when it gets to the partition / format stage, it should show the drive in its total size.

Delete your partition, and it should also show at least most of its size at this point.

When you create the 50Gb it should still show some remaining unpartitioned space.

If it doesn't show either in the BIOS or there correctly take it back to the shop and get a replacement.
