Start with the "Live" distro's to get a feel for Linux before you install it. Try Simply Mepis 6.0 and Ubuntu 6.06 and have a play. Puppy is for older machines and has restricted applications so keep the size down. Of course, if you are trying it on a older pc then use Puppy of course!

508904 2006-12-23 07:20:00 Hey newbee, congratulations on trying Linux and goodluck.:) winmacguy (3367)
508905 2006-12-23 07:38:00 Ubuntu seemed to work ok as a live CD.. a live CD will give you an idea of how well a certain distro will get along with your comp set-up... drivers etc.

I didn't much like Mepis or an early version of Freespire but each to their own (the GUIs were a bit lacking compared to Suse but Ubuntu just scraped by).

Liking or not liking Linux is a different matter altogether and you definately need to 'try before you buy'.

508906 2006-12-23 07:57:00 What are the brief specs of your machine? And what type of modem? In my limited experience and from what I have heard, serial external modems are easier to connect with. I have tried Puppy 1.08 live cd on a 466mhz 196mb machine with an external modem and was online within half an hour. worl (8599)
508907 2006-12-23 09:08:00 i have a p4 2.4ghz with 512mb ram dail up modem ati video card newbee (10498)
508908 2006-12-23 09:35:00 With those specs you can run any modern distro, but do not get too excited over getting your internal modem to work. They can be rather tricky at times under Linux.

I would suggest you look at the LiveCD of Mepis and Ubuntu. Both use different desktop environments which offer different looks and styles. Mepis uses KDE which I prefer myself, and Ubuntu uses Gnome which is more minimalistic. Using a LiveCD means you can look without touching your hard drive at all. Keep in mind because it will be running entirely in RAM and off your CD drive the speed will be much slower than a hard drive install will be. :)

508909 2006-12-23 23:47:00 My unbiased opinion is... Mepis. Murray P (44)
508910 2006-12-24 00:58:00 Ubuntu has probably the biggest community around so you know there will always be someone to help :)

I myself planned to move to Ubuntu once XP started giving me errors. Seems to be holding up this time but Windows is Windows :D
