508888 2006-12-23 06:14:00 I've just inserted a second SATA hard drive into my computer. When I boot into Windows the device is recognised and drivers installed, however, it does not show up in Windows Explorer. The drive already has data on it. Is there any way I can install this without losing any data? Thanks in advance. JMoore (9352)
508889 2006-12-23 07:42:00 Go into Disk Management (right click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management) and see if it shows up there, how does it have data on it? has it already been formatted? The_End_Of_Reality (334)
508890 2006-12-23 07:45:00 It shows up as Disk 1, Dynamic, Foreign. It was taken from a friend's computer where it was used for storage - works fine on that computer. Any ideas? JMoore (9352)
508891 2006-12-23 07:53:00 Hmm, what is the File System? (says in Disk Management) The_End_Of_Reality (334)
508892 2006-12-23 07:58:00 I can't seem to find any information on File System... JMoore (9352)
508893 2006-12-23 08:04:00 Hmm, did it come out of a PC or a Mac?

In the little info box, what does it say for the drive?

508894 2006-12-24 01:12:00 The hard drive came out of a PC and was formatted as NTFS on the other computer. I have attached a screenshot of Disk Management. Any ideas?

508895 2006-12-24 01:17:00 I think normally a hdd is basic not dynamic, and there is no other option, but to format it. To get it back to basic.

That yellow triangle with the ! on that dynamic hdd must mean something. Most probably that it cant read it.

508896 2006-12-24 03:32:00 Is your PC running XP Home or XP Pro? XP Home does not support dynamic disks.

If you want to revert to a basic disk, you'll have to back up all volumes on the disk, remove the volumes, revert the disk, create partitions, and restore the volume data.

508897 2006-12-24 04:35:00 Yes, I just Goolged and found this (www.petri.co.il ows_xp_2000_2003.htm) saying that XP Pro, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 can read Dynamic Disks... but not Home... so I am guessing that is your problem The_End_Of_Reality (334)
