508912 2006-12-24 02:49:00 Hi there Newbee,

As Jen said, you could have trouble with the internal modem and Linux. I used a Dynalink External serial modem with several different types of Linux - including Puppy, Xandros (my current OS), Mepis, PCLinuxOS and the modem worked fine with all of them.

Another tip if you do get that internal modem working with Mepis. On dial up I found it helpful to reduce the post intialisation delay from the default 50 to around 7. Otherwise I seemed to be waiting for ever for it to start dialling.

Merry Christmas to all on the forum

Jim

508913 2006-12-25 20:50:00 Dont forget: Just because you dont like one flavor, doesnt mean that Linux isnt for you.. Its not like the difference between XP Home & Pro, its worth you trying a couple of different ones if you dont get the one you like the first time round ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
508914 2006-12-27 13:48:00 I like Xandros 3.02 OCE myself. The OCE stands for Open Circulation Edition, and is the free version of Xandros. Generally the OCE is one version behind the paid version, although the OCE also has some other restrictions like no DVD burning capabilities.

Xandros is a hard linux to screw up because it forces you to install things through it's file manager. Although this means it can take a bit of searching to find downloads of the files you want.

Windows XP is far more user friendly than most Linux distros, but Linux is far more customisable...still hard to game on Linux.

P.S. I have also used Gnoppix 3 (Gnome) live CD, Knoppix 4 (KDE) live CD and Mandrake 8 back around 2001-2002 (old version of Mandrivia)

508916 2006-12-28 23:08:00 yea Gentoo is extreme customisation. But I don't have the technical knowledge for anything like that. I was growing up when the command line was on it's like legs as far as being the primary way to do things, hence unless it has a button, or simple command line codes, I can't do it lol.
