509052 2006-12-24 00:41:00 Everytime I start up Windows XP, I am unable to open Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and other programs like that. However, when I use the task manager and close 'explorer.exe', re-execute it again, then it seems to work fine. Any suggestions for this problem...I'm tired of going through this routine to get my programs running correctly. slim1233456 (11655)
509053 2006-12-24 00:55:00 Have you considered using a restore point previous to the start of this problem? Worth trying> smurf (6545)
509054 2006-12-24 00:56:00 You could try downloading Spybot (www.spybot.info) and the detection updates, then do a scan of your system.

Or get Hijackthis (www.merijn.org)

Unzip the zip file, run the exe file and then click on scan and save a log, and then copy and paste the log here.

509056 2006-12-24 17:12:00 There are a few things to consider, besides the fact that you have HJT installed in the wrong place . . . . .

( Remember that Hijackthis must be run in an own folder . Only if Hijackthis run in an own folder it will create backups! You have it here where it is not going to work correctly:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00 . 030\Hi jackThis . exe )

. . . . . and another is concerning a newer version of your service pack that is available, and this isn't a sure thing as you've cut off the top of your scan log and it isn't showing what SP you've got .

Service packs increase the safety of your system . Visit Microsoft's windowsupdate site to download the newest version of the service pack .

I am sure that you will get a note or two about the folly of having Symantec/Norton in your system . . . there, I started it myself .

You have an inactive or broken link or so, but that's not much bother . . . that can be removed/fixed in fine tuning .

This, however must be fixed by ticking in the box on HJT results (not the log file) and then removing the entry:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7b4d79df-9ef0-429d-a0e9-d9b138c6a53b} - (no file)

Unnecessary (deactivated) entry that can be fixed . isaddon . dll - ProtectionBar, rogue "security software", related to the notorious PS_Guard/SpywareQuake/WinAntivirus, . blogspot . com/2006/03/" target="_blank">sunbeltblog . blogspot . com seen-in-wild-spyware-quake_25 . html foistware and detected as a variant of the FakeAle aka Zlo .

This removal may have to be done in Safe Mode . . . and make sure your System Restore is turned off FIRST before you do this!

Nasties hide in restore points and re-infect you at next boot .

Get back with a new scan log after you make that repair . . . . .

509057 2006-12-24 18:13:00 Okay, I have moved HJT to my Program Files folder so it could keep the backup files inside. Here is another scan:

509058 2006-12-24 18:31:00 Looks better...a missing hook or two, but the nasty is gone for now....was this after a reboot?

I see you have Yahoo! toolbar...do you really need/like it? It's not a nasty, per se, but it likes to "watch you". Not in my book as being friendly, if you know what I mean.....
SurferJoe46 (51)
509059 2006-12-24 18:32:00 Yes it was after a reboot. I also don't need the Yahoo! Toolbar, so I guess I'll get rid of it. slim1233456 (11655)
509060 2006-12-24 18:57:00 Yes it was after a reboot. I also don't need the Yahoo! Toolbar, so I guess I'll get rid of it.

So do things work as expected now?

509061 2006-12-24 18:59:00 No, still the same problem. Maybe I should reinstall windows again? slim1233456 (11655)
