2006-12-24 00:06:00 | Sometimes when I exit something, e.g. Firefox my computer hangs. What I mean is I can move the mouse around (sometimes) but I cannot click anything and down in the taskbar Firefox is still displayed as being open. And sometimes it does the above, and then a beep comes from the computer and then I can't move the mouse at all. It hangs or lags or whatever you care to call it for anywhere between 5 - 30 seconds... Why is it doing this? This computers nearly brand new. Got it about 3 weeks ago. Intel Celeron 3.06Ghz (single core) ASUS P5VDC-MX motherboard XFX MX4000 PCI video card ANCIENT (5 - 6 years old) Maxtor 40GB HDD - Did a format 3 weeks ago when we got the computer, has about 10GB of space on it And 512mb of some kind of ram Why is it doing this? By the way, it doesn't do it EVERY time. Help please Thanks.

2006-12-24 00:26:00 | Well first of all you had the stupidity to get a Celeron... :p What programs are doing it? all? a few? many? etc etc, list them, open Task Manager and see what is hogging the CPU. Run HijackThis (www.download.com) and post the log. What Anti Virus/ Anti Spyware are you running? Is the RAM ok? did you test it for faults when you got it? (Memtest 86 (http://www.memtest86.com/)) Also is anything overclocked? CPU stable? (burn in tested (users.bigpond.net.au)?)

2006-12-24 08:31:00 | We couldn't afford a better CPU and I just got the IT guy to pick the best cheap parts so this will do. I'm using AVG anti-spyware (formerly Ewido) and AVG free. In task manager System Idle Process and sometimes guard.exe (which is AVG anti-spyware) are hogging the most CPU. That's cos AVG anti-spyware scans everything that comes and goes on the computer. Can't do the memtest cos you gota put it on a floppy disk and I don't have one. Got a drive, but no disk. Nothing is overclocked cos i'm to scared of overheating it and plus I don't know how. Burn in test thing was fine. HJT log is as follows: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 9:13:02 p.m., on 24/12/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskswitch.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost 2003\GhostStartTrayApp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\VTTimer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb0 4.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\ipoint.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost 2003\GhostStartService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\mdm.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\daemon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\hjt.exe R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = go.microsoft.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = go.microsoft.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = go.microsoft.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = go.microsoft.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = count.flashget.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1 O2 - BHO: Yahoo! The things it's done it in so far is Firefox and explorer windows e.g. My Documents and My Computer. What is odd is that when closing games e.g. Need for speed underground 2 and CSS it doesn't do it...Strange because they use alot more resources than Firefox! Thanks for any suggestions.

2006-12-24 08:48:00 | Older versions of Firefox had this problem, upgrade to ver 2.001 if you don't have it. | zqwerty (97) | |
2006-12-24 09:04:00 | The latest version of FF does it periodically on my machine as well, usually when I am closing a tab in FF. Since it doesn't affect anything else I do I don't worry to much about it. | winmacguy (3367) | |
2006-12-24 09:55:00 | Yea ive got 2.001 And it's not just firefox it did it on my documents a couple of times too. and sometimes when it hangs the computer beeps (its the beep when you hold down up,left and down all at the same time on the arrow pad on the keyboard, that same beep) and then the mouse becomes unmovable for about 30 seconds (and yes ive replaced mouse batteries its not that)

2006-12-24 10:37:00 | Well you can download a bootable CD version of memtest and put it onto a CDRW, that is what I do... As for the log, re run in safe mode and remove these entries: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe O2 - BHO: CVirtualDNSObj Object - {86C510E9-97EF-4749-914F-0280247BE3A6} - C:\WINDOWS\VirtualDNS.dll (file missing) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: S&end to OneNote - {2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office12\ONBttnIE.dll O9 - Extra button: Send to OneNote - {2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office12\ONBttnIE.dll

2006-12-24 21:32:00 | There are new downloads for this board on the asus web site dated 22/12/06, support.asus.com sounds to me like memory issues, you didnt say which RAM modules you are using!, value RAM?, you may wish to check compatiblity with the mobo. There are new BIOS which normally produce better stablilty, and greater range of memory classes. You could try a BIOS upgrade! edit - Merry Xmas...hehe
