509837 2006-12-26 21:49:00 It's this scam I am bothered with. I keep getting completely ludicrous emails that are in colour - with pathetic printing all over the place - starts by offering financial advice about shares or something then just becomes a complete mess - no sense at all. They use various names as the sender. Now I do know I am not the only one suffering but can anybody tell me if there is any action being taken to stop this lot?
At the moment I just delete the things (shift/del) - Windows seems incapable of recognising it as scam.

509838 2006-12-26 21:57:00 Just install a program and block them.

Windows won't block them, by itself. As there's nothing built into Windows to stop it.

509839 2006-12-26 22:04:00 The ISPs are doing all they can to prevent spam but some still manages to slip through, unfortunately . Here is a suggestion to help minimise the bother of it .

First, change your email program's layout to non-preview mode so that you do not view the email when you click on the header . Put a "Preview" shortcut icon up on the toolbar for quick switching between modes if desired .

Next, change your email program's setting to show emails in 'plain text' .

Now you will be able to view all your sender and subject lines without actually opening or viewing any emails and can quickly delete all those that are obviously spam .

509840 2006-12-26 22:25:00 Just get a program like poptray which is free.

It'll pick up the emails, then once u get whatever, u can add it/them to the whitelist or blacklist.

It shows where the email is from, (the email addy) the subject, and u can even preview the email with it.

The spams/emails u add to the blacklist can also use wildcards.

Which will let u block the origins of the spams for good. Or the domain for good. Works for me.

509842 2006-12-26 22:56:00 Use filters - incoming emails are checked "is sender in my Thunderbird address book?" If not, they are flagged bright purple and moved into a 'Junk' folder. Check headers in 'Junk' once a day, find occasional valid senders, salvage message, add sender to address book. Then delete all 'Junk'. Haven't used layout with default 'view' for years - it shouldn't even be an option in email apps these days! coldot (6847)
509843 2006-12-27 21:14:00 Thanks everybody for the advice. I looked at changing to NON PREVIEW mode but frankly cannot see how I would benefit. I do like the preview mode and despite the nuisance of these emails they appear to do no harm - I am protected by AVG and several other anti virus programs. I feel that its more a case of my server (SLINGSHOT) having the problem.
However a filter seems a good idea from my angle anyway.
I am also looking at POP TRAY but as I have never seen it before am still at the stage of wondering what the heck I need to do with it. Fortunately I am one of those strange people who actually read HELP files so I should learn.
But I am still left wondering what the IT people are doing about the problem.
And who the heck is sending these emails and why?

509845 2006-12-27 21:33:00 All you have to do with Poptray (www . poptray . org) is download it, install it, then it'll put an icon on the taskbar .

Then right mouse on it / options . Then accounts tab, put your name (any name), the ISP's server, your login/username / password .

Under the rules tab, add one rule:

Give it the name of Spam, Under Area, put it on Header, Under Compare, put it on Contains, and under Text type in [SPAM] .

And underneath tick delete from server . Keep the other options unticked .

Under the mail tab this is where you'll see the new email . When u get spam, (or other), u can right mouse on the email here and select add to white list or blacklist .

Then click on the options tab again, click on general option, tick start minimized / animated tray icon .

Under user interface option u can change the icon when it scans for email .

Under the options tab, near the bottom on the left you'll see White / Black list . This is where u can add people u know to the whitelist (their email addies) .

Or once u add people to the blacklist u can change it so it looks like this *@isp,xxx . This will block the whole domain (wherever the email / spam came from) .

If u want some spam addies, (I think I've got around 60-70 lol) let me know I'll send some to you (all u have to do is copy and paste them into the black list window .

509846 2006-12-28 04:22:00 Thanks everybody for the advice . I looked at changing to NON PREVIEW mode but frankly cannot see how I would benefit . Right, well it is much less of a hassle switching between preview and non-preview modes if you have that shortcut icon on your toolbar, as I previously suggested .

If you are like the majority of PC users you probably don't view your emails in plain text mode . Because of this when you view your emails those images embedded in the spam emails send a little notification back to the sender to let them know you have viewed that email . That alerts them to the fact that your email address is valid and you will then be the happy recipient of many more such emails . Is that not harm enough for you? Your AV and other programs will not prevent this .

I feel that its more a case of my server (SLINGSHOT) having the problem .

I can assure you that they would be doing all they possibly can to prevent spam as all the spam traffic costs them big money . Have you enabled the spam filter in your Slingshot account online or ensured that it is active?

I am also looking at POP TRAY but as I have never seen it before am still at the stage of wondering what the heck I need to do with it .

Poptray is great, though I no longer bother with blacklisting and creating rules, I just delete messages that are obviously spam .

Why do the cretins send spam? Simple - because it makes them rich .
