| 509810 | 2006-12-26 12:48:00 | Hi, Recently an electrician extended my telephone line to a new upstairs renovation to my house. After that, my broadband quality became very poor, cutting out every now and again (I can't download without a download manager, grr), and my connection speed has dropped too, from around 3500kb/s to 1500-1850kb/s. This shows on various speedtests as a drop from my old 2100 to 1500kb/s. I presume this is from line noise, but the phone still sounds fine. I presume faulty wiring would stop the phones working, so if it is noise, how can this be combated? |

There shouldn't be much change resulting from correctly installed cable extending to upper floor (unless you're living in the Sky tower!) Try your modem downstairs in the original phone socket, it that's better then try with a 10m phone extension from the downstairs socket from window to window or up the stairs. Of course if the new cabling is faulty you'll probably find that all phone sockets are affected and you'll need to disconnect the new cable to prove it. |

Unplug the phone from the new extension and see if that helps. Alternatively, if that is your new ADSL outlet, it may be tapped off a socket that has a phone on it without a filter.
