509940 2006-12-27 03:57:00 How difficult would it be to install a DVD burner or new optical drive into a laptop? If a professional did it, how much would it cost? not.my.s0ck (10995)
509941 2006-12-27 04:12:00 It will depend on the laptop. :D

Unless it's just a matter of pulling out a unit from a bay and plugging in the other one, I'd suggest you pay what it will cost to get someone to do it. As laptops get smaller, thinner, and lighter they become more difficult to work on. Anyone can dismantle one. It can be more difficult to put it back together with no bits left over, and in a working condition. ;)

509942 2006-12-27 04:35:00 Its a HP Omnibook and in the manual it says it uses a 12.7mm module (?) not.my.s0ck (10995)
509943 2006-12-27 05:03:00 Have you looked at the price of new laptop optical drives?? I looked at replacing one a couple of years ago and got quite a shock at the cost.

509944 2006-12-27 05:25:00 No, I have no idea how much they cost, more than $200? not.my.s0ck (10995)
509945 2006-12-27 05:53:00 Have you tried TradeMe for a second hand one for your laptop. I have replaced a DVD\CD reader with a combo on my IBM ThinkPad - just plugs in easily. johnd (85)
509946 2006-12-27 06:59:00 Is there a tutorial anywhere I can find for this? not.my.s0ck (10995)
509947 2006-12-27 07:18:00 I found a technicians handbook for my laptop on the net - each one will be different I would think. johnd (85)
509948 2006-12-27 09:47:00 I think if your laptop supports it get it or if there is a 3rd party dvd burner and your laptop supports removable drive bays.

If not its probably gonna be v expensive. I would struggle to think of a guy who does it - tear it up .. custom make it ...

Cheaper to get a used laptop with removable drive bay. DVD burners for laptop is pretty expensive like 400-600 I think, a desktop DVD RW is like 60. Many times even for IBM the drives you get are like TEAC brand or PANASONIC or MITSUMI or SONY or HITACHI.

If you want one for your current laptop - just go to HP.COM and check if HP supplies a part for it and if not go online like ebay and see if someone makes one for it, I recall for the older IBM they support CDRW but you can get a 3rd party DVD RW option.

509949 2006-12-27 09:51:00 IBM you just slide it out and slide the new one in. Even I can do it. Nomad (952)
