509830 2006-12-27 00:11:00 ok currently i have not typed in xtra's dns server into my windows settings and it's set to disabled. is there any difference if i typed in xtra's dns server settings and enabled dns for my broadband connection? Will it run faster? What are the pros and cons of enabling dns? i use a router with other pc's using the same broadband connection. lance4k (4644)
509831 2006-12-27 00:56:00 No it wont run faster.

If you're on dialup if u don't put the DNS server ips in, in some versions of windows, u won't get on the net.

Don't know bout broadband since I don't have it. I don't think it matters whether the DNS server ip are entered or not.

509832 2006-12-27 01:44:00 Lance, if your NIC is on DHCP (gets the IP address from the router, it will get DNS server setting automatically.

If like me, you have wireless and sometimes the router doesnt send a stronf enough signal from DHCP, you can input a static address from the wireless card within your IP range and stipulate the DNS server address as shown in the router.
This helps some weak router wireless networks.

509833 2006-12-27 02:37:00 I've never found any difference in speed by changing dns settings. But it can be useful as part of diagnosing potential connection problems. Greg (193)
509834 2006-12-27 02:46:00 It can also be useful when Xtra's DNS server have a hiss fit & you cant get anywhere. stu161204 (123)
509835 2006-12-27 03:46:00 Its Xtra helpdesks favourite fix. Never made the slightest difference to anything I've ever fixed. pctek (84)
509836 2006-12-27 10:18:00 I've been finding Xtra's DNS servers to be very unreliable recently so I've changed my DSL router to use ORSN's public DNS servers. Since I did that my web surfing performance has improved considerably, not in tems of speed so much as no more "can't find page" errors etc. Even though they are located in Europe they perform much better than Xtra's IMHO.

Check out european.nl.orsn.net

I point all my computers at the router for DNS and specify the DNS IP in the router config.
